Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application tiled February 18,1907. Serial No. 357,913.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. VILLEY, a citizen f the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county of Brown and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Forming Molds, of which the following is a specifica-A tion.
This invention relates to molded articles and more particularly to methodsfor forming such articles, and has for its object to provide a simple and quick method of making a mold to be used in forming' a tank or similar article from plastic material.
Another object is to provide a method for i making a mold of this kind, which may be employed by a person having little skill, and which will require the use of no lumber or specially arranged patterns or mechanism.
Another object is to provide a method of making a mold which will be such that a tank formed in the mold will have a foot piece or base.
Other object and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes and slight variations in the exact method set forth may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the inven- OIL In the drawings forming a partion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure l is a vertical section through a mold formed in accordance with my invention, parts being illustrated in perspective, Fig. 2 is an elevational view of a tank formed in the mold.
In forming a mold in accordance with my invention, I describe a circle on the ground and remove the earth within the circle to the depth equal to the thickness which I desire for the base or foot piece of the tank to be formed, and I then dig downwardly and outwardly to form a circular trench 5 having the flare which I desire to impart to the walls of the tank. Ol'- the earth within the inelosure 0f this circular trench, I ferm a core 6 by rounding and smoothing the upper portion thereof, and I then coat this core with grease or other matter to4 prevent the adherence of the tank thereto. I then introduce into the circular opening 7 formed bythe removal of the earth within the inclosure of the circle, as mentioned, a suitable amount of concrete or other plastic material to ilill the mold, and I then allow this to harden. After the tank has set, I dig away the earth thereabove which is indicated in the drawings at A, and I then pry up the tank and remove any clinging portions of the core. There is thus formed a receptacle including au upwardly flared continuous wall S, and a base er foot piece 9. It will be understood that the shape of the tank may be varied to suit different conditions, `by changing the shape of the trench 5.
What is claimed is The herein described method of forming a mold for tanks consisting of describing a continuous line upon the earth, inclosing an area having the shape desired for the foot piece of the tank to be formed, then excavating the earth from this area to a depth equal to the desired thickness of said foot piece, then digging downwardly and outwardly to form a continuous trench and then rounding and 4smoothing the earth within the inclosure of the trench.
In testimony whereof I a'l'lix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. IVILLEY.
