Fair ronic ASSIGNOR NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW noonnsr nn,
PATENT OF ICE,
TO THE SILL COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed October 10, 1903. Serial Nil-176.549.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. OURTIs, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking- Stoves and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals. marked thereon.
My present invention relates to improvements in stoves, and it has for its object to provide a broiler attachm nt adapted to be applied thereto in such a manner that it may be moved into any desired position and automatically held there by an improved form of latch, which latter may be released auto matically to permit the return of said at-- tachment to its normal or original position.
To these and other ends, my invention consists in certain combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, the features of novelty being pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a stove or other suitable device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sec tional view on the line 2-2 Fig. 1, showing the parts in their raised positions. Fig. 3 is a similar View on the line 33 Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the relation of the parts while the cover is being lowered.
In these views, the same numerals of reference designate similar parts.
In order that my said invention may be more fully understood, reference will be had to the herein shown embodiment thereof, wherein 1 designates a cover having pivot projections 2, 2 arranged thereon to bear upon the stove top 3 to form a hinged joint for said cover. This cover is preferably arranged to rest upon the flange 4 and to normally cover the aperture 5 formed in the top of the stove preferably above the combustion chamber in such a manner that the upper surface of the cover will be flush or will form a continuous surface with the top of the stove, and fitted into this cover are the usual lids 66, and the center piece 7 e011- necting them, an extension 8 carrying a handle 9 being provided to facilitate the elevating and lowering of the cover about the proj jections 2, 2 as centers. At one end of the hinged cover thus formed, is provided an offset lug or projection 10, adapted to rest in the depression 11 of the stove top when the cover is lowered, and depending from this projection are the bearing lugs 12-12 carrying the pin 13 from which is pivotally sus pended the link or latch 14, the normal tendency of which is to assume a substantially vertical position. This link is provided upon one edge with one or more notches or teeth 15, adapted to engage a relatively fixed cover supporting projection 16 preferably carried upon the under side of the stove top, and at the lower portion of said link is provided a curved oil'set portion 17 arranged to ride upon the curved surface of the relatively fixed lug 18 as it approaches its upper limit of motion, and somewhat offset from this lug 18 in a direction laterally of the plane of movement of the cover is provided a slot 19 formed in the stove cover to permit the free passage of said link therethrough at one side of and thus clear of the supporting projection for a purpose of permitting lowering or closing movement of the cover, and as the latch is suspended freely and is disengaged from the supporting projection when the cover is in closed position, the latch will automatically swing into position in readiness to move into engagement with the projection on the nextlifting or opening movement of the cover.
The utility of an appliance of this character will be readily apparent to those familiar with the uses to which devices of this class maybe applied. IVhen the cover is in its normally lowered position, the top of the stove has a substantially continuous upper surface, capable of being utilized for all the purposes of an ordinary stove; but when it is desirable to utilize the services of a broiler, the cover is lifted up approximately into the position shown in Fig. 2, and as the cover is lifted, the link or latch 14 will ride at one edge upon the projection 16, and as the con ter of gravity thereof is carried over and beyond said projection toward the pivot due to the relative position of the supporting pin 13, the notches 15 thereon will automatically drop over the said projection, to retain the hinged cover at any desired height to permit the introduction of the necessary culinary appliances beneath it. When it is desirable to lower the cover, it is slightly raised until the curved offset portion 17 of the link rides over the lug 18 to such an extent as to move the link out of line with the projection 16 and to drop by gravity into the slot to permit it 19, which extends back far enough to allow the latch to be freely lowered after its teeth have become disengaged from the projection 16, after which it will swing to its normal position. To insure the free and proper operation of the link in lowering, the arm thereof may be provided with the curved portion 20 so arranged as to permit the link to retain substantially a vertical position while in the slot 19 and to render it possible to locate the operating parts in close proximity to the side or other parts of the stove. Thus it'will be obvious that I have produced a hinged cover provided with a latch that will be automatically operated by gravity to retain the cover in the position to which it has been will automatically release itself when said cover has been elevated slightly beyond its upper limit of adjustment-allowing said cover to be freely lowered, until it again assumes its normal position upon the flange 4 of the aperture 5, at which time, the latch will have automatically swung into a position with its notched or toothed edge opposite the projection 16.
An appliance of this character is comparatively inexpensive to fit to stoves, and in operation is particularly useful as a broiler, as the gravity actuated latch enables the device to be manipulated with facility.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a stove top, a cover pivotally mounted thereon, and a cover-supporting projection onthe stove top having a slot or passage at one side thereof, of a latch freely suspended on the cover on a pivot so located as to move over said projection and toward the pivot of the cover during the opening movement of the latter to carry the latch into cooperative relation with the adapted, and that said projection, and means for swinging the latch out of alinementwith said projection and into a position to enter said passage at the side thereof to permit closingmovement of'the cover.
2. The combination with a stove, and a cover mounted in pivotal relation therewith, of a toothed latch pivoted to swing in the 1 plane ofmovement of the cover, and having a laterally offset portion thereon, of a projection arranged on the stove at a point between the pivot of the cover and the latch, the latter being held in cooperative relation with the projection by gravity as the cover swings in one direction on its pivot, a cam being provided on said projection to cooperate with the offset portion of the 'latchto automatically disengage jection by a continued movement of the cover, and a slot being provided adjacent to the projection to receive and guide the latch after the latter has disengaged from the projection.
3. The combination with a stove top, a cover pivotally mounted thereon, and a cover-supporting projection formed on the stove top and having a slot arranged at one side thereof, andextending toward the pivot of'the cover, of a latch on the cover on a pivot so located as to move over the supporting projection and toward the pivot of the cover during opening movement of the latter to carry the latch into cooperative relation with the projection, and a laterally offset portion on the latch serving to move the latter out of alinement with said projection and into a position to enter said slot at one side of the projection to permit closing movement of the cover.
i. The combination with a stove top having an opening therein and a slot leading from said opening, and a cover-supporting projection formed at one side of said opening and adjacent to the said slot, of a cover pivotally mounted on the stove top, a latch freely suspended on the cover by a pivot arranged at'a point to freely suspend the latch in said opening opposite to the supporting projection when the cover is closed, and arranged to carry the latch into engagement with said projection when the cover is opened on its pivot, said latch having a cam portion arranged to engage a portion of the stove top to move the latch laterally out of alinement with the projection and into a position to enter said slot, to permit closing movement of the cover.
