Specification of Letters Patent.

Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safes, and has for its principal object to provide a novel form of safe of that type in which a screw is em ployed for locking purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safe of this character in which a screw carried by the door is adjustable to inoperative position so that the door may be readily opened and closed without turning the screw.
Vith these and other objects in View, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the ad- 1 vantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure1 is a sectional plan view of a safe constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the safe showing the door in open position, a portion of the hinge being illustrated in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of a portion of the hinge. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the door on the line 4---t of Fig. 2 illustrating the manner in which the operating stem of the combination-lock is mounted.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The body the present instance as cylindrical in form, and is preferably made of manganese steel or the like, the cylinder resting in a horizontal position on a suitable support 11 which may be formed integral with the cylinder casting if desired. Extending across the central portion of the cylinder is a cross bar or partition 12, atthe center of which is a tapered opening for the reception of a tapered flange 13 that forms a part of a bar 14, said bar be ing threaded near its center for the reception portion 10 of the safe is shown in l of a locking nut 15 which engages against one wall of the cross bar or partition and serves to lock the central bar 14 in proper position. This bar 14. is provided at each end j with female screws for the reception of j threaded bolts carried by the doors.
j The safe in the present instance is shown I as provided with two doors 16, 16 that are disposed, respectively, at opposite ends of the cylindrical casing, and the preferred form of door is provided with an inclined shoulder 17 and a straight shoulder 18 arranged at an obtuse angle to the inclined shoulder, these two shoulders fitting against correspondingly shaped shoulders formed at the ends of the cylinder, and forming a tight, fluid proof, joint therewith. The shoulder 18 is preferably provided with an annular groove 19 for the reception of a packing ring of rubber or any other suitable material, which, when pressed firmly against the end j of the cylindrical wall of the safe will form a joint that will positively prevent the enf trance of nitroglycerin, or other high explol sive in the event of the creation of a partial j vacuum within the safe, such as is some times formed in an attempt at safe blowing. Projecting from one side of the cylinder j to a point beyond the end thereof is a pair of spaced pivot cars 21 that are provided with j rectangular openings receiving correspondj ingly shaped blocks 22 that are guided withand are free to move in a j direction parallel with the axis of the cylindrical body of the safe.
