LOCKING DEVICE FOR GAS-COCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,958, dated February 9, 1897.

To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN DOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looking Devices for Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generically to devices for locking cocks and valves and also for limiting their operation; and it relates specifically to gas-supply cocks and to means for locking them when shut off and for limiting the extent of their opening.
, Among the particular objects of my invention are to provide gas-supply cocks with a locking device which is entirely inclosed, so
unlocked excepting by the proper key, and which is of simple and strong construction, and also with simple and effective means for adjusting and limiting the extent of opening a of the cock, so that no more than a predetermined supply of pressure or gas can pass through the cock.
In order that my invention may be clearly ascertained, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I carry the invention into practice, and then particularly point out the invention in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like parts are designated by the same Figure 1 is a sectional view of a gas-cock embodying my invention on the linel 1, Fig. 2. Fig.- 2 is a sectional view of the same on Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cock-casing.
A designates the casing of a gas-cock; B, the core; 0, the core-washer, and D the coreretaining nut, the core B being shown in Fig. 1 closed to completely shut off the cock.
I prefer to construct the-core Bin two sections, the section B constituting the body of the core and having the transverse gas-passage O to register, when opened, with the gaspassages in the casing, and the section B united to the section B and formed with the usual flat stem E for turning the cock.
The top of the core-section B is by preference closed by a solid head D to prevent the gas from passing into the outer part of the core, and the core-section B is chambered at G to fit flush over the headD of section B and is fastened thereto by screws F within the casing A, so as to form the complete core.
In the chamber G of the core-section B and on the head D of the core-section B, I prefer to mount a sliding bolt H, having in this instance two ordinary locking-tumblers I, which bolt is adapted to work through a lateral slot J in core-section B and, when the cock is shut ofi, into a corresponding bolt-hole K, which I form in the interior of the casing A, so that the cock-core will then be securely 6 5 locked against turning and the cock against opening. At the same time it will be impossible, owing to said locked bolt, to withdraw the core from the casing and thus reach either the bolt or the incasecl screws F, which secure the core-section B to the core-section B, so that no one, unless armed with the proper key, gan open or disarrange the cock so as to allow the gas to pass therethrough.
I provide for locking and unlocking the cock-bolt H by means of an appropriate key L, inserted in a key-slot M, which I form axialiy through the core-stem E, so as to lead to the lock-chamber G and to the bolt H and tumblers I.
For adjusting and limiting the opening of the cock and thus the possible supply of gas therethrough I form a series of (in this case) three concentric slots 0 of varying lengths in the interior of the casing A, and in the core- 85 section B a corresponding series of sockets or holders P, in one of which holders a peg or stop Q is screwed when the core is withdrawn from the casing, so as to (when the core is in place) ride in one of the concentric slots 0, 0 and thus limit the rotation of the core and opening of the cock, according to the length of the particular slot 0 selected, without in any way interfering with the complete closing of the cook. The cock can thus be set 5 to admit only a predetermined supply or pressure of gas or can be closed and locked, so as to absolutely prevent any gas from being admitted therethrough.
I claim as my invention- 1. The cock herein described as having its casing formed with a bolt-hole on its inside, and its core constructed of two sections, inclosing therebetween a locking bolt, and
united by fastenings as screws, Whose heads are covered and sealed by the casing, and locked by the bolt inside the casing.
2. The combination with the casing of a cock having a bolt-hole on itsinside, of a cock core constructed of. two sections inclosing therebetween a chamber, fastenings uniting said sections and sealed by the casing and a locking-bolt Workingin said chamber through the wall of the outer section of the core into said bolt-hole, said outer section of the core being provided with a key-slot to admit a boltlocking key.
8. The combination, With the casing of a cockhaving a series of concentric slots of varying lengths, of a cock-core having an adjustable stop to ride in either of said slots, and variably limit the opening of the cock.
4. The combination, with the casing of a cock having a bolt-hole and a series of slots of different lengths, of a cock-core having an adjustable stop to ride in either of said slots, a bolt in the core, and means for operating the bolt by a key.
5. The combination, with the casing of a cock having a bolt-hole and a series of slots of different lengths, of a cock-core having an adjustable stop Within the casing to ride in either of said slots, a-bolt in the core and means for operating the bolt by a key.
6. The combination, with the casing of a cock having a series of slots of different lengths, of a cock-core havinga series of stopholders corresponding to the respective slots, and a stop to be held in one of said stopholders.
