Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIS CON- NELL, of the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening, Closing, and Locking Doors, (my said device being more especially applicable to the doors of elevator shafts and other inclosures,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description or specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the figures and letters marked thereon.
In Letters Patent previously granted to me, the said JOHN FRANCIS OONNELL, numbered 773,531, dated October 25th, 1904, the device comprised under the Letters Patent has its operative parts connected to two sliding doors and to each other by means of bolts or rivets, and pivotal connections, which as shown in the drawings and described in the specification of the aforesaid Letters Patent, are neither capable of adjustment nor adapted for taking up any slackness in the joints of said parts which from time to time naturally results from practical wear and tear in the use of the device, nor is there provision in the operating lever and link of the said device for maintaining the operating lever and link rigidly stiff, and horizontal by interlocking of the said lever and the link, when the lever and link are in the horizontal position.
My present improvements have for their object to provide for interlocking the operating lever and the two links connecting the said lever to the two sliding doors, and to the spring or equivalent device whereby the two sliding doors, operating lever and links, are connected to one side, end or angle of the elevator inelosure, and to maintain the said operating lever and links rigidly locked when the two doors are closed over the opening of the elevator inclosure into the cage operating therein.
My invention has also for its object to provide adjustable pivotal connections for the aforesaid operating lever and links and their connections, by which they are at all times capable of adjustment corresponding with the wear and tear of the oints themselves.
My invention has also for its object to enable the adjacent edges of the two sliding doors in the elevator inclosure to be brought much nearer to the corner of the inclosure whereinto and toward which corner the doors slide when the doors are opened than is possible by or with the springl connection projecting from the corner of the inclosure, and of the kind described in the specification and shown in the drawings of my aforesaid Letters Patent.
Upon the annexed drawings Figure l, is an elevation of one side of the interior of an elevator inclosure at the part thereof where two sliding doors are situated, which on being opened admit of ingress or egress to or 'from the elevator cage or car, operating within the inclosure, and when closed prevent such ingress or egress. In Figs. 1, to 4, such parts of the elevator inclosure as are essential to illustrate my invention are marked A. The'lever J, is pivoted to the door B, by the pivot 7L, in Fig. 1, and it is connected to the door B, by the link K, and the lett hand part of the lever J, is long enough so that when in the horizontal position its thumb and 'linger piece L, closes down upon the upper edge of the link K, and maintains all parts of the opening and closing device in the horizontal position. The lever J, is connected by the pivot j, Fig. 1, to the link I, the outer end of which is fastened to the pivot H, of the spring bolt H2, contained in the box G, all as shown at Fig. 1. The left hand end of the link I, is formed a; a catch N, which engages with the under edge of the lever J, when the opening, closing and locking device is in the horizontal position shown in Figs. 1, and 3. Both the thumb and linger piece L, and the catch N, are provided with a lining ol' india rubber as shown in the enlarged sections Figs. 14, and 15, to take up as tar as possible any blow or shock which may be due to the closing of the lever J, and the links K, and I, into the horizontal and looked position. At Figs. 14, and 15, the enlarged sections respectively, ot these parts of the device, the india rubber pads O, are shown in section as held in the parts L, and

As shown enlarged to about its actual size at Figs. 5, and the spring attachment whereby the link I, in Figs. l, and 3, is attached elastically to the Vframing' or grille work of anl elevator inclosure, consists of the box G, formed with an upper and lower projection G2, and G3, respectively, through which holes g, are made for the passing of bolts or screws for securely connecting the box G, with the framing or grille work of the elevator inclosure. Through the rear or back otl this box marked G4, in Figs. 5, 6, and 8, an opening is made through which the head portion ot the bolt H2, passes as more particularly shown in section in Fig. 4. The head or that portion ot this bolt H2, which is situated within the hollow of the box G, is constructed as having two eye pieces H3, and H, respectively, as particularly shown at Figs. 6, and '7, between which the end of the lever F, is situated, and held in place therein by the two conically pointed screws H", and t, which pass through these screwed holes in the eye pieces IF, and H4. The conically pointed screws H5, and H, have a screw driver slot cut into the outer extremity ol each so that a screw driver, having its screw turning member at the side of the shank oin the screw driver can be passed into either sider of the box G, and inserted into the slot of either screw, H, and H, for the purpose of turning the screw in the eye pieces H3, and H4, until the proper adjustment of the conical points of the screws H5, and l within the corresponding conical holes in the end ol" the lever F, is brought about so as to insure steady, smooth and nonshaking operation of the lever F, upon the pivots constituted ot the conical points of the screws H", and H Upon each of the screws H5, and H, a lock nutH7, and H8, respectively, are carried so that after the screws H", and H, have been properly adjusted they are maintained in their adjusted positions by applying a wrench to tighten the two lock nuts H7, and HS. The outer end of the bolt H2, has a screw thread cut upon it, and upon this screw thread the nut H, is carried. A spiral spring H1, is also carried on that part ot the bolt H2, situated between the box G, and the nut H, and by tightening the nut Hf, to any required extent the compression ot the spring H10, is e'l`l`ected, so as to operate elastically when the act of opening or closing the door shown at Figs. 1, and 2, of the drawings, is terminated, thus cushioning any blow, percussion or jar which may take place on the termination of either of these movements of the doors.

Instead, however, ot using the spiral spring H1", for the purpose ol" cushioning the blow due to the opening or closing ol" the elevator' inclosure doors, the cushion e'll'ect may sonictirnes be dispensed with, and in this case l secure the bolt ll?, into the rear part ot the box H, Without using the spring lll", as shown at Fig. 5, wherein the bolt l'l'l, has`r a shorter shank than in Figs. 3, and el., and is rigidly held in the rear part G, ot' the box G. by the screw nut H11., which is tightened thereon by a wrench in the ori'linary inanner. l/Vhen the box G, cannot be conveniently attached to the Vframing or grille work ol the elevator inclosure by ineans ot the upper and lower projections G2, and G, atl the Aliront ot the box G, as shown in Figs. 5, (i, and 7, then corresponding lugs are or rnay be placed at one of the lateral faces of the box G, as shown i'n Fig. 8, in which case the screws or bolts are passed thro`ugh holes in these lateral lugs instead of through the holes g, and g/, shown in Fig. 6.
As shown by the larger views Figs. 11 and l2, the front end of the lever J, in Figs. 1, and 3, is attached to the link K, and the link K, is attached to the pivotal piece K, at the edge of the elevator door, by means of a screw K2,
having a conical head as shown more especially in section in Fig. l2. The shank of this screw K2, is passed into the corresponding screw hole in the part K, and has a lock nut K, at the inner end thereof. The object of placing the screw K2, with conical head, and lock nut K", to retain the link K, at this point of connection, is to enable adjustment thereof to be'rnade and .retained when any looseness of the lever J, about the bolt y, may take place by wear or tear 5 in which condition any loosencss due to this wear and tear is removed by turning the screw K, by applying a screw driver in the slot of the head thereof and tightening the nut K4, correspondingly. The other end of the lever J, as shown enlargedat Figs. 11, and 13, not only shows the thumb piece L, having its india rubber cushion as in contact with the up er edge of the link K, when the opening an closing and locking device `is in the horizontal position, but it also shows the outer end of the joint by which the lever J, is connected to the link K, as shown on the smaller scale at Figs. l, and 2. A section of this joint on the line n, n, is shown at Fig. 19. A washer E@ is situated between the arts K, and J, at this joint so that the lever J, and link K, do not touch each other, but are kept apart by the washer E. 'lhrough the lever J, and link K, and the washer E, is a circular hole,through which the screw E?, is passed. It will be noticed that the screw E2, is constructed with a conical head, and that a conical washer E, is in the lever J. By tightening the screw E2, into the tapped hole in the washer E3, both the conical head oli the screw E3, and conical edge ol the washer E, are drawn tightly together, so that the link K, and le yer J, respectively, are capable of beingl adjusted to any required degree ol accurate vlitting and movement together, and should any wear or teal' or looseness take place in these parts the said joints are or may be at any time tightened by applying a screw driver to thc slot therefor in the conical head ol the screw E2. .By turning the screw driver, the screw E2, is tightened in the washer E. For the purpose of maintaining the screw E3, the washer E, the lever J, and link K, in proper operative relationship, a lock nut El, is applied to the outer end of the screw E2, by which arrangeinent the operative parts ol the oints are capable at all times of being niaintained in coniplete working condition without looseness, shake or noise.
