SEPARABLE LOOSE LEAP BOOK 0R. LEDGER AND BINDER THEREFOR.
APPLICATION FILED Jum zz, i904.
VVHQQSSQSI Tad/ll may concern:-
I Be it known that I, OYRUs E. MoREHoUsn,
. same t ITED STATES SEPARABLEWL'OOSE-LEAF BooKjoR LEDGIER AND BIND-ER THERF-TFO I a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inseparable or Loose-Leaf Books or Ledgers and Binders Therefor, of which the following is a speci-' fication.
This invention relates'to improvements in separable or loose leaf books or lodgers and binders therefor.
Heretofore much difficulty has been experienced in constructin loose leaf ledgers or books which are provi ed with detachable binders, which are designed to clamp upon the leaves, in constructing the clamping devices so that the books will open fiat without pigviding specially constructed hinges or ged extensionsfor the leaves.
It is the object of this invention to provide an improved binder means for a loose leaf book or ledger, and to rovide such a structure in which, when the eaves are so clamped in position, they will readily open into the flat open position without roviding hinges orhinged extensions for the eaves.
Further objects will definitely appear in the detailed'descr'iptio'n to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and meansv described in the following specification.
Theinvention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.- v
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in theaccompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1' isa perspective view of my improved separable leaf book or ledger. 'Fig. 2 'is an en arged detail sectional view of the the'directionof the little arrows at the end of the line. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the clamping lever D Fig. 4 is an en-' plan kviiew of a modified construction of one.

B represents the leaves ofmy i 51 separable. leaf book or ledger. Theleaves M5 are formed with the extensions (1. at ltli bac havirn perforations a therein.
. A clamping strip F, preferably ofmetal, is secured to one of the covers.
brass Throu opposite cover is provided with eyelets 1 perforations to receive the fasteners C, up
through the same. These fasteners are ar-' ranged to pass through the perforations in the extensions 0. of the leaves B. The fasteners C being formed .of flexible rna terial,
after inserting through the leaves and covers Q as stated, are retained in positionbythe clamping levers D D. The clamping evers, D D are perforated at their outer ends and are adapted. to engage the ends of the fasteners C O loosely. The endsof the fasteners are inserted upwardly throu h the perforations in the levers D D an the lovers are then turned com letely over endwise and so fold the ends 0 the fasteners under, and thereby retain them securely in place. It is evident that as the clamping levers are forced down into to the fasteners. p
The inner .end of thehlamping lever D is adapted to engage a button stud E and a snap button Dmember at the inner end of position, tensionis applied lever D is provided to engage the stud'E, so
that by shpping'th'e clamping leversuponj the fasteners O and securing their inner ends,
the parts are held securely and firmlgin position -of the same, asshown in t e modified construction of Fig. 6, the-tendency of the book to close when opened is entirely overcome. and theentire writing surface of the leaf will lie'fiat, and the necessity fora spe+ cial hin ed extension is entirely overcome. I remark'because it is common'to. supplycloth hinges for '-these.. leaves. These leaves.- are of courseada ted :to iise'withany l 'findgt em valu-' able to use E temporary of the PATENT OFFIOE.;,;;.V

Ha vmg thus described my invention, "hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Let tersPatent, is: y
1 In a separable leaf-ledger, the ombinan of covers A. :1; leaves B having perfod hinge extensions atthe rear; a pi te F red to one of said covers; flexible fastens vG carried by said plate, said fasteners be:

D D 20' adapted; to engage said fasteners and fold tlz Same downwardly; and means for detachabl'y'saeuring said levers in position, allcoacting for the pur o'se specified.
2. In a separab e leaf ledger, the combine tion ofsuitable covers; leaves B having perforated hinge extensions at the rear thereof; flexible fasteners carried by one of said cove ers, said fasteners being passed through the perforations in said leaves and through suitable perforati-ons in the opposite cover; clamping levers D D engaging sald fasteners; and means for detachably securing said clampinglevers in position, all eo-acting for the purpose specified. a
3. In atemporar binder, the combination of suitable binding pieces; flexible fasteners carried by one of said binding pieces, said fasteners being arranged'through suitable perforations in the other Zbinder piece; levers arranged to engage said fasteners for applying tension thereto and retaining them;
