Description

IIITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. YOUNGLOVE, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGN OR OF ON E-HALF TO THOMAS B. HICKS, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
DOOR-CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed March 29, 1906- Serial No. 303,802. I
To all whom it WMY/Z/ concern:
, Be it known that I, THOMAS J. YOUNG- l l l The rail member or guide comprises a base strip or support 14 which extends the entire LOVE, a citizen of the United States, residing width of the door and is arranged on the inner side thereof as shown in Fig. 1, the
at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Door-Check, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to door checks, the object of the invention being to provide a check for the doors of landaus, cabs, coaches and all kinds of vehicles having hinged doors, whereby the door is braced and held from rubbing against the wheel and becoming marred or injured, doing away with the ordinary straps now employed. for the same purpose. The construction of the check, enables all or the greater portion thereof to be concealed by the lining or upholstery of the door and the device also embodies means for tying the side bars or uprights of the door to gether, thus acting as an additional brace for the door itself.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a vehicle door and a portion of the vehicle body showing the check applied thereto. Fig. 2 is anenlarged horizontal section through the same.
In the drawings 1 designates a portion of the body of a vehicle and 2 the pillar or hinge post at one side of the doorway, while 3 rep resents the door havingthe inner and outer side bars or uprights 4 and 5 respectively, the door as a whole being hinged. at 6.
The door check contemplated in this invention comprises three main parts, viz; an eye member or hinge piece 7, a rail member or guide 8 and a connecting link 9. The hinge piece or eye member 7 embodies a metal hinge plate or strip 10 provided at one end with a hook 11, which forms part of a sectional eye, the remainder of the eye being formed by a clip 12, which is secured to the plate or strip 10 by means of a suitable fastener 13 which passes through both clip 12 and plate 10 into the pillar or hinge post 2 as shown in Fig. 2.
outer end thereof being secured to one of the side bars or uprights of the door by a suitable fastener 15 while the inner end of said strip is provided with a tee-shaped head. 16 which is secured to the inner side bar or upright of the door by fasteners 17. The strip or support 14 thus forms a tie bar which ties the side bars or uprights of the door together. Extending along the inner portion of the tie bar 14 is a rail or guide 18 which is off-set from the bar 14 as shown in Fig. 2 by having the end portions thereof bent or deflected inward, the inner end of the rail or guide extending inward substantially at a right angle to form a stop shoulder 19 for the link 9 and i being secured fast to the inner end of the bar 14. The opposite end of the rail 18 is provided with a foot 20 through which a screw or other suitable fastener 21 is inserted into the body of the door, said fastener passing through the tie bar 14.
The link 9 is an open center one and one end thereof is received in the sectional eye member 7, while the opposite end embraces the rail member or guide and is provided with a laterally extending eye 22 which forms a runner that moves lengthwise of and slides upon the rail or guide 18.
When the door is thrown open, the runner 22 slides inward from the rail 18 until .the outer end of the link 9 strikes against the stop shoulder formed by the angular end portion 19 of the rail. The door is thus checked before it comes in contact with the vehicle wheel shown at 23. In closing the door, the runner 22 moves outward along the rail or guide 18 permitting the door to swing to its closed position. To take the door off its hinges, the clip 12 is removed, which releases the link 9 from the eye member.
The door check as a whole is preferably applied to the inner side of the door about mid-way between the hinges thereof and preferably about on a level with the seat of the vehicle. the tie bar 14 under the lining or upholstery as shown at 24, thus concealing the tie bar Without interfering with the sliding of the runner 22 on the rail or guide. The device It is also desirable to arrange as a whole may be ornamented in any desired manner and the rail 18 and the side bars of the link 9 may be round, square, or of any other desired shape in cross section according to the desire of the manufacturer. These and like changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departin from the principles or sacrificing any advantages of the invention.
The check, as a whole, strengthens the door itself and also stren thens and reinforces the door hinges, an reduces the liability of the door breaking away from the hinges.
I claim 1- 1. A check for preventing a vehicle door from opening far enough to strike against the adjacent vehicle wheel, comprising a hingepiece, a horizontally disposed guide member having a stop shoulder, and a horizontally disposed link connected with the hinge-piece and guide member and free at all times to cooperate with the guide member to arrest the outward movement of the door.
2. The combination with a vehicle door, of a door check embodying a hinge piece comprising separable sections, a horizontally disposed rail member or guide, a horizontally disposed link member connecting the hinge piece and rail member, and a stop shoulder for the link' member.
3. The combination with a vehicle door, of a door check embodying a hinge piece, a horizontal tie-bar connecting the side uprights of the door, a rail member or guide eX- tending lengthwise of the tie-bar, a horizo ntally disposed link member connecting the hinge piece and rail member, and a stop shoulder for the link member. 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
THOMAS J. YOUNGLOVE.
