" III/Ill UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JAMES C. DAWSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO SIEBER & TRUS- SELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
LOCK.
4Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 16, 1907.
Original application lled April 30,1906, Serial No. 314,436. Dividedand this application filed November 15, 1906. Serial No. 348,609.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. DAWSON, a resident of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, and a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the followin is a specification, and-which are illustrated 1n the accom anying drawings, forming a part tliereoi).
This invention has been divided from my copending ap lication for patent on looseleaf binders, erial No. 314,435, filed April bolt and ya tumbler for securing the bolt in its' advanced position, and has for its object-t provide a lock particularly adapted for use in situations in which a portion of the bolt is necessarily exposed when the lock is closed.
A detaill of the invention provides for a cam en a ement between a tumbler of the lock an t 1e bolt when the latter occupies an intermediate position to effect the withdrawal ofthe bolt.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a lock constructed according to the invention and shows a detail 0f thel sheet-holding mechanism of a looseleaf ledger to which the lock may be applied. Fi 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of ig. 1. Figs. 3 and .4 are lan views showing the mechanism of the loc indifferent positions. Fig. 5 shows a tumbler used in the lock, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of a key used for opening the lock.
The particular form of lock illustrated in the drawingsmay be employed for preventing the unwarrantable opening of the binder mechanism of a loose-leaf ledger having 'relatively movable clamping-plates. for gripping the sheets to be bound. As shown, the binder mechanism comprises an intermediate back member 12, upon which the clamping members, as 10 11, are slidably mounted, and each of these members carries a plurality of telescoping bindingost members 13.
The movement of t e clampin members 10 and 11 ,to open and close the blnder is efected by means of cam-levers 14 15, pivotally mounted on the back member-12 and.
operatively engaged b a cross-head 16, carried b a threaded ro 17. One end of the threa ed rod 17 registers with an opening 18 in the end ange 19 of the back member 12,
and through this opening a key or crank-rod (not shown) may be inserted to turn the threaded rod 17.
The lock forming the subject of the invention is shown applied to the frame of the binder to Iprovide means for closing the opening 18. t preferably comprises a ch ambered casing 20, which, as shown, has alaterallyextending iange 21 for receiving attachingscrews 22 23, enteringr the back member 12 of the binder. A reeiprocable bolt 2 4 extends through the casing and, as shown, is provided upon one of its ends with a thumbpiece 25 for the application of pressure to close the lock.l Preferably, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, the thumbieee 25 occupies a osition flush with the wa l of the casing 20 w en the lock is closed.
The bolt 24 is provided with one or more lugs adapted to be engaged by the lock-tumblers. Two such lugs 26 27 are shown, and these take the form of lateral wings, each having a forwardly-inclined face 28 and an abrupt shoulder 29. A tumbler, as 30 3l, moves across the path of each of the wings 26 27 and is most conveniently fixed. against lateral displacement by means of pins 32, mounted in the wall ofthe lock-casing and engaging slots 33, formed in the tumbler. Each of the'tumblers is provided with a shoulder, as 34 35, for engaging a -lug or wing of the bolt and with a flange, as indicated at 36 37, adapted to be engaged by the wards of a ke the ange 36 of the tumbler 30 preferab y extending across the face of the bolt 24 to a position adjacent the key-openin 38 in the front Wall of the casing 20. Pre erably the tumblers of the lock are spring-advanced, and in the form of construction illustrated a retractile spring 39, reacting between the two tumblers, is provided for this purpose.
y In use the iange 21 of the lock-casing may he covered by the leaves of the ledger secured between the clamping-plates 1U 11, thereby preventin access to the screws 22- 23 to remove the ook from the binder-frame. The bolt 24 is advanced to close the opening 18 by pressure on the thumbiece 25, and when IOC in this position it is firm y secured against t e aperture 38 in the wall of the lock-casing,
and when turned its wards engage the flanges 36 37 of the tumblers' to retract them, and one of them contacts with a ortion of the bolt, as the`inclined face of tie wing 27, to raise it. When the key has been given a partial rotation, the tumblers 30 31 are released and are advanced by the spring 39 upon the inclined faces '28 of the wings 26 and 27, respectively, engaging them by a cam action to complete the raising of the bolt. This action is facilitated by providing one of the tumbler's, as 31 with an inclined forward face 41. When the bolt 24 is advanced in closing the lock, the tumblers 30 31 are displaced to allow the wings of -the bolt to pass by a similar cam action.
The number of tumblers in the lock and the configuration of the wards of the key 40 may be varied at will to increase the diiiiculty of icking the lock or to provide a series of loc cs for each of which a `different key is required.
I -claim as my invention* 1. In a lock, in combination, apressureadvanced bolt having a lug, a spring-advanced tumbler movable across the path of the lugmen the bolt, the rear face of the tumbler being inclined and the forward face of the tumbler being abrupt, and a key for withdrawing the tumbler and partially Withdrawing the bolt.
2. In a lock, in combination, a pressureadvanced bolt having a lug, a spring-advanced tumbler movable across the path of the lug 0n the bolt, the rear face of the tumbler and the forward -face of the bolt-lug bcing inclined and the forward face of the tumbler and the rear face of' the bolt-lug being abrupt, and a -key for withdrawing the tunibler and partially withdrawing the bolt.
3. In a lock, in combination, a pressureladvanced bolt having a lateral wing, one face ofthe wing being inclined and the opposite face of the wing being abrupt, a spring-advanced tumbler en aging the wing, and a key engaging the turnb er to move it away from the bolt and engaging the bolt to withdraw it.
4. In a lock, in combination, a casing, a reciprocable bolt extending through the casin and havin lateral wings with abrupt and ob iq-ue shoulders, a pair of spring-advanced tumblers engaging such shoulders, and a key for withdrawing the tu-mblers and partially withdrawing the bolt.
5. In a lock, in combination, a chambered casing, a reciprocable bolt extending through thecasing and having lateral wings each having one abrupt shoulder and one inclined face, a pair of recprocative tumblers, one engaging each wing, a retractile spring reacting 4between the tumblers to hold them in engagement with the bolt, and a ltwo-ward key engaging the tumblers to move them away from the bolt and engaging a wing of the bolt to raise it.
