Description

the y i tdci www L. FARNSWRTH, OF HUDSON, lVIASSACI-IU,SETI-'1,5%L
Letters Patent No. 85,07 7, dated December 22, 18(58.
IMPROVED BOOT AND SHOE-SI'AVE.
The Schedule refenedto in these Letters Patent and maln'ng part of the same.
Know all meu by these presents Ihat I, lL. H. FAnN'sWoR'rH, of Hudson, in the county oi' Middlesex, and Commonwealth oYMassachusetts, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe-Shaves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and eXa-ct description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of' this speciiieation, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my im proved boot and shoe-shave;
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section online A B, iig. l;
Figure 3 re1n'esents a perspective view of the bladeseat;
Figure 4 represents a transverse section online C D, fig. 1; and
y Fig. 5 represents a transverse section on line E F, fig. l.
lo enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, to make and use the saine, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists, rst, inv the peculiar manner of securing the guard to the handle; second, in the peculiar manner of combining the blade with the handle, as will be hereafter described.
In the drawings- I The part lettered is the handle of the shave, to which is fastened the blade B in the following manner-:
At each end of the blade Bis placeda metallic seat,l
D, which is shown. in iig. 3 of the vdrawings separate from the shave. This/seat I) consists of a face-plate,
a, having upon its inner side twoprojections, b and e,
which t into recesses cut in the handle for that purpose, one upon the top and 011e upon the bottom side.
The tace-plates are also let into the side of' the handle, so as to be Hush or even therewith, and are there retained by screws which pass through the plates into the handle, as fully indicated in the drawings.
The face of the handle A and the blade-seats D D are recessed or cut out to receive vthe ends of the blade B.
Slots areforlned in the handle A and projections'lb c of Vthe.blade-seats D D, through which pass the screws e," by which the blade is retained in place, and
vby which it can also be adjusted or moved forward as its edge wears away.
From the edge of the blade B to the outer' side of tions, pass screws q g by which the guard C is kept in position.4
, Midway between the screws g g is another screw, k, which passes through the handle A, and its endrests on the inner side of the guard C. By means of this screw the guard C can be raisedvwhen it is desired,
and in combination with the screws g g the guard G can be adjusted very accurately for thick and thin shavings, or one end of' the guard can be raised and the other lowered.
' By the foregoing description it will be seen that I have constructed a boot and shoe-shave, which is 'very desirable,- anld can be adj usted with greater nicety than the shaves now in common use,.and by the use ofthe blade-seats the handle will last until a great many blades have been worn out. y
I am also enabled to use a wooden handle, whichis much preferred by many workmen.
Having described my improved boot and shoe-shave,
What I claim therein -as new, and desire to secun-l by Letters Patent, isl l. The combination, with the lhandle A and guard 0, of the screws g q and L, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l
2. The combination, with the handle A and blade B, of the blade-seats D D, having slotted projections b c, substantially `as and for the purposes set forth'.
3. The combination, with the wooden handle A, of thepeculiarly-constructed blade-seats D D, blade B, guard-piece G, and adjusting and holding-screws g g and 7.', substantially and for the purposes set forth.
