Description
v8. 8. CARSLEY.
Alarm Rug. No. 85,088. Patented Dec. 22,1868.
,time @add IMPROVEMENT IN ALARM-RUG.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all fwhom it may conce/rn l Be it known that I, B. CARSLEY, of the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Rug Alarm; and I do hereby declare-that theA following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the vaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. l Figure l represents a door-way to which my improved alarm has .been att-ached.
Figure 2 isa detail view of the same; Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has forl its' object to furnish an improved alarm for attachment to door-ways and windowframes, which shall be so constructed and arranged that it maybe impossible for any one to enter through the door or window, even when said door or.window may be open, without sounding analarm, and which shall, at, the same time, be simple in construction, easily applied, and readily disconnected when not required; and
d It consists in a metal plate or rug, or a stiff-bottomed rug, slipped under or thrown upon the top of the carpet or oil-cloth, in the hall of a house, and connected with an alarm-gong in the ordinary manner.
A represents a door or window-frame. Y B represents a portion of the 'floor or window-sill, aboutl the construction of which there is nothing new.
C is a metalplate attached to the floor or sill B, in l front of the frame-A, and is `of such width that the person entering the door or window must necessarily 'stepA or press upon the said plate or platform O.
The plate C is covered with a mat or rug, or it may' be the foundation of an integral part of the said rug.
. The edge of the plate O farthest from the frame A is secured to the floor or sill B, in such a way that its other'edge, that is nearestto the frame A, may have a slight up-aud-dowh movement. f
D is an ordinary gong-bell, attached tothe upper part of the frame A, and the operating-lever or arm of which is connected with the forward or movable edge ofthe plate C by the connecting-wire E, as shown in the drawings, so that when thevmovable part of the plate G is moved downward, by pressure upon any part of said plate, thegong D may be sounded to give an alarm. y
The plate O may be made elastic, so` that, as soon .as the pressure upon it is removed, it may again rise to its former position. The wire E may be covered or encased, if desired,
.to prevent it from being tampered with.
*It should be observed that the gong D may he connected with the doorv or window-sash,` so as to be 'sounded by the opening of the said door or sash, in the ordinarymanner. But my device 'is designed for use when the said door or sash is already open, and prevent-the entrance off any one unannounced.
-Having thus described my invention, y
What I claim as new, and desirev to secure by Letters Patent, is4
The movable spring-plate 0,'when'covered with or forming part of a rug, and used in connection with a door or window, and connected with an ordinary gong,
l), by theconnectingwire E, arranged as shown anddescribed,`for the purpose speciiied.- l The above specification of iny invention signed by me, this 22d day'of July, 1868. l R. B. GABSLEY. Witnesses:
- ALEX. F. ROBERTS, JAMES-T. GRAHAM.
