My invention is herein, as in Letters Patent No. 782,490 aforesaid,=set forth as applied in connection with a locomotive-boiler 4, which is of the ordinary construction and is provided at its forward end with a smoke-box 4; A plurality of fire-tubes 4, ordinarily of comparatively small diameter, extend from the fire-box at the rearend' of the boiler,,which is not shown, to the front fluesheet 4 and the products of combustion pass through said tubes and through a number of tubes 67 of larger diameter, which are located in the upper and, middle portion of the space within the boller and which will be herein descriptively termed superheating-tubes, to the smoke-box 4 from which partments. they are discharged into the atmosphere 1 ply and dehvery T-head compartments 62 through ,a stack in the ordinary manner. Steam is supplied from the boilerto the cylinders through a main. steam-pipe or drypipe 61, passing through the front'flue-sheet 4 and connected in front thereof to a transverse T,-head 62, fromwhich it is conducted through superheatcr-pipes 69, which with their connections will be presently described, and after being superheated in said pipes passes to the cylinders through branch steampipes 63, located on opposite sides of the smoke-box. 1 i
In the practice of my invention I locate in each of the; superheating-tubes, 67 one or more pairs (preferably, as shown, two pairs,) of, superheater-pipes 69, said pipes extending longitudinally in the superheating-tubes from a verticalplane a short distance-say thirty inches or thereaboutforward of the fire-box flue-sheet to vertical planes inthe smok e-box forward of the front flue-sheet.
The superheate'r-pipes of each pair are connected at their rear ends by return-bends or other suitable fittings and are heldup in normal position in the superheating-tubes by any suitable and preferred supports.
1 The superheater-pi es are open at their forward ends, at whic h they are connected, as hereinafter described, with the main su ply steam-pipe 61 and the branch or delivery steam-pipes 63, so as to constitute thelength of which the steam which is to be superheated traverses from the supply steam-pipe to the branch or delivery steampi es. To this end I 1provide 'a T-head', w 'ch com rises a supp -compartrnent 62 to which t e mainsiipply-pipe or'dry pipe.
61 is connected in the usual manner, and a delivery-compartment 62, located in front of the supply-compartment and separated therefrom by an intervening space, to the ends of which compartment the branch or delivery steam-pipes 63 are connected. A plurality of vertical saturated steam-headers 70 and superheated steam-headers 70 extend downwardly from the supply and the delivery T-head compartments, respectively, and communicate therewith at their rpper ends, the headers being preferably, as shown,
integral with the respective T'-head co n- In the instance shown the supand 62 are formed integral and connected by narrow webs62 but they may, if desired, be made of separate castings having projections on their front and rear-sides, respectively, which are planed and faced off on a machine and abut so as to insure their registration and proper locationrelative to the frontand rear compartmentcastings. The saturated and the superheated steam-headers are alternated in position or located in different vertical planes on the compartments of the header with which they respectively communicate, as clearly own in Fig. 3, and their walls are entirely out of contact with another and are exposed throughout to the heat of the smoke-box ases.
b The forward end of one of the superheaterpipes 69 of each pair is ex anded into the rear of the saturated steameader of the .vertical row of superheating-tubes in which the pair is located and the forward end of the other pipe of each pair is similarly connected to the rear of the superheated steam-header 70 of the same vertical row. Openings which are closed by removable plugs 70 are formed in the fronts of the headers, said openings providing for the insertion, examination, cleansing, and repairs of the superheater-pi es. In the event of leakage at the joints t e plugs can be detached and the pipes expanded as required.
In operation saturated steam froln the boiler passes through the dry-pi e 61 into the supply-compartment 62 of t e T-head, and thence into the communicating saturated steam-headers 70, from which it passes first rearwardly and then forwardly through the connected superheater pipes 69 and thence into and through the superheatel steam-headers 70 bein in its traverse through the headers and superheater-pipes thorotghly superheated by the hot products of combustion which pass through the inclosing supcrheating-tubes and through the smoke-box. The superheated steam passes from the superheated steam-headers 70 into the communicating delivery-compartment 62 of the T-head and thence through thetbranch steam-pipes 63 to the enginecylinders for utilization therein.
By reason of'the substantially complete separation of the walls of the supply-compartment of the T-head from those of the delivery-compartment thereof and of the complete separation of the walls of-the saturated steam-headers from those of the superheated steam-headers loss of heat which would result from its transfer through said walls from the superheated to the saturated steam is effectually prevented. The form and location of the headers are also such as to expose a large area of effective heatingsurface to the action of the hot products of combustion passing through the smoke-box.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a tubular steamboiler, of asuperheating-tube, a pair of sutirely separated from those of the saturated steam-header and connected to the forward end of the other superheater-pipe, and a Tehead comprising a supply-compartment communicating with the saturated steamheader and a delivery-compartment communicating with the superheated steam-header.
2. The combination, with a tubular steamboiler, of a superheating-tube, a pair of superheater pipes extending longitudinally therein and connected at their rear ends, a vertical saturated steam-header located in front of the superheating-tube and connected to the forward end of the pair of superheaterpipes, a similarly located vertical superheated steam-header having its walls entirely separated from those of the saturated steam-header and connected to the forward end of the other superheater-pipe, and a T- head comprising a supply-compartment communicating with the saturated steam-header and a delivery-compartment having its wall which is adjacent to that of the supply-compartment separated therefrom by an open space, and communicating withthe superheated steam-header.
- 3. The combination, with a tubular steamboiler, of a vertical row of superheating-tubes, pairs of superheater-pipes extending longitudinally therein, fittings connecting the ends of the pipes of each pair nearer the firebox, a main steam-supply pipe, a steam-delivery pipe, a vertical saturated steam-- header and avertical superheated steamheader located in front of the row of superheater-tubes, having entirely separated walls, and communicating, respectively, with the receiving and the delivery ends of .the steamchannels formed by the vertical row of pairs of superheater-pipes, and a T-head comprising a supply-compartment communicating with the steam-supply pipe and with the saturated steam-header and a delivery-compartment communicating with the superheated steam-header and with the steam-delive i e.
it steam-boiler superheater, the combination of superheating-tubes, pairs of superheater pipes extending longitudinally therein and constituting steam-channels, a T-head structure comprising a supply-conipartment communicating with a steamsup ply pipe and a delivery-compartment communicating with a steam-delivery .pipe and the supply-compartment separated therefrom by an open space, a plurality of vertical saturated steam-headers extending downwardly from the T-head supply-compartment and connected on their rear sides to the receiving ends of the steam-channels, a plurality of vertical superheated steam-headers extending downwardly from the T-head delivery-compartment and having their walls entirely separated from those of the saturated steam headers, said superheated steamheaders being connected on their rear sides to the delivery ends of the steam-channels, and removable plugs closing openings in the front sides of the headers opposite the ends of the superheater-pipcs.
5. In a steam-boiler superheater, the combination of a T-head structure comprising a supply-compartment communicating with a steam-supply pipe and 'a delivery-compartment located in front of the supply-compartment and communicating with a steam-delivery pipe, a plurality of saturated steamheaders extending downwardly from the supply-compartment, a plurality of superheated steam-headers extending downwardly from the delivery-compartment, and a plurality of superheater-pipes forming steam-channels, the opposite ends of which are connected to the rear side of the saturated and the superheated steam-headers, respectively.
