Be it known that I, HERMAN SIEMUND, a

' citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Bowls-and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in a device to be used for holding a bowl or other vessel on a table or other support, and while it is more especially intended for use in connection with trays or tables of high chairs for babies for firmly and securely holding a bowl thereon from which the child may take.

flower-pots, and the like; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a holding device of the above-named character which shall be compact in form, simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, and effective in operation, and so made that it may be readily attached to or removed from the table or support and also in such a manner that the bowl or vessel may be readily engaged thereby or quickly and easily removed.

Various other objects and advantages of' the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, of a'holder embodying my invention, showing it in place on a highchair tray or table and illustrating the bowl in its secured position. Fig. 2 is a detached plan view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, of'the movable member or jaw of the clamp, showing the means for raising and lowering the same; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modification in the form of the screw used for operating the movable member of the clamp.

In the present instance I have shown the holder applied to a portion of the tray or table of a high chair for babies, which is designated by the reference-numeral 10, and, as is well known, these trays or tables have at their edges upwardly-extending flanges or' portions 11 to prevent articles fallin from the table onto the floor; but I desire to e un-.

yet at a suitable distance apart to permit of i the insertion of the table or support 10 and when the same is provided'with a marginal flange 11, as shown in F ig. 1 of the drawings, for the insertion of said flange.

The upper portion of the lower arm 14 has a fiat surface and is slightly broadened, as at 15, thus forming the fixed jaw of the clamp, which is adapted to rest on the lower surface of the table or support. Between the inner portion of the jaw 15 and the upright or main portion 12 of the bracket or clamp the arm 14 is provided with a depression or recess 16 for the reception of the downwardly-extended its upper end a head 19 of any suitable shape,

by means of which it may be turned. The lower portion of the screw 18 is reduced, as at 19, and is located in an opening 20 in the plate or movable jaw 21 of the clamp. The lower portion of the opening 20 in the jaw or clamping member 21 is enlarged or flared to receive the enlarged or flared portion 22 on the lower end of the screw. By this construction or formation of the opening 20 in the member 21 and of the lower portion of the screw a simple manner of swiveling the plate or member 21 on the screw is provided; but it is obviousthat other means for so connecting them may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The member or plate 21 has at its central portion a lateral or horizontal extension 22*,

which projects toward the main or upright portion 12 of the clamp and carries a rod or stem 23, which is located in parallelism with the screw 18 and is extended through an opening 24 in the upper arm 13 of the clamp. On one of its sides the plate or clamping member 21 is provided with an apertured lug 25, in which is located and secured one end of a ring 26, which may be made of any suitable size, form, and material, but preferably of wire. The other or free end of the ring or bowl embracing device is provided with a handle 27, and near said end 'the ring or embracing device 26 is bent to form a loop 28, one member, 29, of which is adapted to engage a lug or catch 30, produced on the side of the plate or member 21 opposite that on which the lug 25 is formed. The other member 31 of the loop 28 is bent upwardly and then outwardly, as at 32, so as to raise the handle 27 a slight distance above the table or support in order that it may be easily taken hold of when it is desired to fasten the member 29 or to disengage it from the lug or catch 30.

As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the ring or embracing device 26 for the bowl has its portions adjacent to the plate or clamping member 21 bent inwardly and then in parallelism with one another, as at 33, in order to cause the ring or device 26 to more completely embrace the bowl or vessel 34, which, by preference, is formed at its base with an annular bead 35, thus producing a circumferential groove or depression 36, in which the ring 26 will rest when in position on the bowl, and thereby securely hold the same in place on the table or support when the same is used to support the bowl but it is apparent that the bowl may be supported by means of the ring or device 26 without the table or support 10 but of course it would be necessary to secure the clamp to a suitable support.

From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings it will be clearly seen and readily understood that by employing a holder constructed according to my invention a very simple and inexpensive device is afforded,

! which is compact in form and has its parts so arranged that when applied to the tray or table of a high chair there will be no downward projections to interfere with the movement of the feet and legs of the child, as the operating screw and guide-rod for the movable or clamping member 21 of the clamp are both located above the table or support and out of the way of the childs feet.

In order to quicken the movement of the member 21 of the clamp, I may substitute for the screw 18, shown in Fig. 1, a screw 18 shown in Fig. 41, in which it will be seen that the upper portion of the screw only is threaded, while .the lower portion thereof is imthreaded, thus permitting the unthreaded portion to be freely drawn through the opening in the arm 13 as soon as the threads are out of engagement therewith, thereby permitting the plate or member 21 to be quickly moved near enough to the arm 13 to permit the flange 11 to be withdrawn. The member 21 may have secured to its lower surface, by means of cement or otherwise, a piece of rubber 37 or other suitable material, which will prevent the member 21 marring the up per surface of the table or support.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a bowl-holder, the combination with a vertically-disposed clamp-bracket having a laterally-extended arm at each of its ends, the lower one of said arms having its upper portion broadened to form a jaw of the clamp and spaced from the upright portion of the bracket to form a recess between the same, said jaw adapted to rest on the lower surface of the support, of a movable jaw interposed between said arms and having on one of its ends an upwardly-projecting catch, a screw extended through the upper of said arms and swiveled to said movable jaw, and a ring to embrace the bowl or vessel secured at one of its ends to one end of the movable jaw and adapted to detachably engage the said-catch on the other end of said member.

2. In a bowlholder, the combination with a vertically-disposed clamp-bracket having a laterally-extended arm at each of its ends, the lower one of said arms having its upper portion broadened to form a jaw of the clamp and spaced from the upright portion of the bracket to form a recess between the same, said jaw adapted to rest on the lower surface of the support, of a movable jaw interposed between said arms and having on one of its ends an upwardly and laterally projecting catch and on its other end a horizontally-apertured lug, a screw extended through the upper of said arms and swiveled to said movable jaw, a guide-rod mounted on the movable jaw and extended through the upper arm of the bracket, a ring to embrace the bowl or vessel having one of its ends secured in the aperture of the lug on the movable jaw or member and bent near its other end to form a loop one portion of which is adapted to engage the catch on the movable jaw, and the other portion of which loop is provided with an upwardly and outwardly projecting eX- tension, and a handle mounted on said extension, substantially as described.
