To all whom, t may concern: f Be it known that we, LoUIs WINDT and GEORG MATLIKA, citizens of Austria, residing at Spring Hill, 63 Robison road, inthe county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inClothes-Line Supports and Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the laccompanying drawings. This invention relaates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes-line supports and holders; and the invention has for its primary objectthe provision of novel means for adjustably supporting a plurality of clothes-lines, whereby the lines may be lowered to permit of clothes being suspended thereon and then elevated to support the clothes above the ground and prevent them from being soiled or injured.

Our invention aims to provide an aerial clothes-support that can be easily and quickly manipulated, said support being constructed at a considerable height, whereby clothes suspended therefrom will be freely aired and protected from contacting with the ground or other objects.l l

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be presently described and claimed.

To put our invention into practice, we construct our improved holder of two channelshaped posts l and 2, which may be of any desired height. Each post is provided with a cap 3, from which is suspended a pulley 4.

The posts 1 and 2 are arranged a considerable distance apart, and the confronting open sides of the posts are partially closed by plates 5 5, secured to the posts by screw 6 or like fastening means. The post 1 is provided with brackets 7 7, and journaled upon said brackets isa double reel, consisting of spools 8 and 9. The arbor or shaft 10 vof the reel is provided with a ratchet-wheel 11, which is normally engaged by a gravity-pawl 12, pivotally mounted upon one of the brackets 7. The end ofthe arbor or shaft .10 is squared, as at 14, in order that a crank may be ernployed for rotating the reel.

The interior of the post 1 adjacent to the reel is provided with two pulleys 16 and 17 also with a pulley 18. Secured to the spool 8 is a cable 19, said cable passing over the pulley 16, upwardly over the pulley 4, and carrying upon its end afplurality of equallyspaced line-carriers 20. The uppermost carrier is provided with a weight 21, whereby when the reel is released the carriers will descend by gravity. The downward movement of the carriers is limited by a transverse bar 22, secured to the plates 5 5.

In the post 2 is arranged a plurality of carriers 23, said carriers being supported by a cable 24, movably arranged within the post 2 and extending over to the post 1, around pulleys 18 and 17, where it is attached to the reel or spool 9.

The carriers 20 23 are similar in construction, and each carrier consists of a block 25, carrying an outwardlyextending pierced arm 26, to which clothes-lines 27 are attached. The blocks are provided with revoluble wheels 28 28, adapted to bear against the rear wallof the posts and guide the carriers in their movement. To prevent the cables 19 and 24 from interfering-with the movement of the carriers 20 and 23, I provide each carrier with a rearwardly-extending resilient arm 29, said arms being adapted to embrace the cables 19 and 24 and retain them in engagement with the rear Walls of the posts 1 and 2, at the same time permitting of their movement.

In operation the arbor or shaft 10 of the reel is released and the lines 27, supported by IOC the carriers 20 and 23, permitted to descend,

at which time the clothes to be suspended from said lines are secured thereto. The crank 15 is then rotated to elevate the carriers 20 and 23, this being accomplished'by simultaneously winding the cables 19 and 24 upon the spools 8 and 9. The lines 27 are locked in an elevated position at the top part of the posts 1 and 2 by the pawl 12 of the reel.

The carriers 20 and 23 may be located any desired distance apart, whereby various IIO kinds of articles may be suspended from the lines 27 We preferably construct our entire lineholders of strong and durable metal and suitably brace the posts l and 2, whereby considerable weight may be supported and suspended from the lines of said posts.

We do not care to conine ourselves to the number of lines used in connection with the post or to the size and minor details of construction, as various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a clothes-line support, two hollow supporting-posts spaced apart and having` open confronting faces, a pulley suspended interiorly of each post at the upper end thereof, a reel suspended from one of said posts and having two spools, a carrier-supporting line suspended from the pulley in one of said posts having one end connected to one of said spools, a plurality of carriers suspended from the other end of said line, a'nd each having an arm projecting through the open face of the post, a carrier-supporting line suspended from the pulley in the other of said posts having one end attached to the other of said spools, a plurality of carriers suspended Jfrom the other end of said supporting-line, and

leach having an arm projecting through the open face oi' the post, and clothes-supporting lines connecting the arms of the carriers in one post to the arms of the carriers in the other post.
