Be it k o n tha "I, A. :Beenas,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenl'y, inthe county of Johnstonand State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Briers, of which the following isa specification.
The invention relates to driers, and more particularly to the class of tobacco driers.
The primary object .of the invention is the provision of a ..drier of this character wherein the same iS adapted to be installed within a tobacco barn or like device so that the leaves of tobacco after being picked from the plants can be readily hung upon a series of tier pole driers or frames which are suspended for the raising and lowering thereof to enable the handling of the same and the tobacco to be dried with minimum labor and despatch.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a drier of this character wherein the tier poles or frames can be conveniently raised or lowered to the desired position for the positioning of the tobacco leaves which are strung on sticks so that such leaves will be properly cured while stored within the barn or the like edifice.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character where in the frames or racks for the tobacco leaves can be readily and easily loaded and unloaded, and thereby minimizing time and labor for this purpose.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the construction thereof is of novel form for the successful carrying out of the method of curing leaf tobacco.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse Sectional view on the line of Fig. 1.
:Fig. & is asectional view on the line H of Fig. Fig. 5 is an end elevation.
rSimilar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the :drawings.
lieferringito the drawings in detail, A designates generally a frame including base sills =10, vertical corner posts or beams 11, top rails 12, and hip rails or :beams 13, which are united in any ordinary wellknown manner, and extending from the hip rails or beams 13 tothe bottom sills lOat intervals are studdings 14L, while fixed to the latter and to the corner posts or beams 11 are :guide )QlGiltS 15 for the guiding of tiers or columns of drier racks or frames 16 whlch are raised and lowered in 'a .manner' presently described.
Rotatably mounted in the ends of the uppermost rack or frame 16 of each tier or column centrally thereof are pulley wheels 17, while mounted for suspension from the hip rails or beams 13 are pulley blocks 18 having pulleys 19, and over these pulleys 17 and 19 are trained the raising and lowering cables 20 for the respective tiers or columns of trays or racks 16, each cable 20 being fixed at one end to the hip rail or beam 13, while its other end is fixed to a Windlass or drum 21 for the Winding or unwinding of the same on or from the same, the drums 21 being fixed to turning shafts 22 journaled in bearing rails 23 fixed to the inner and outer sides of the corner posts or beams 11 and also fixed to the studdings H, the shafts 21 being formed with crank handles 2 f whereby the same may be rotated for the winding or unwinding of the cables on or from the drums 21 supported thereby.
Connected to the uppermost racks or frames 16 of the tiers or columns, and also connected to the remaining racks or frames thereof are flexible suspension cables 25 which serve to connect together the racks or frames 16 of each tier or column so that on the raising thereof the same will be sus pended in spaced relation to each other as will be clearly apparent.
Formed in the outer bearing rails 23 are holes 26 in which are detachably engaged stop pins 27, the same being adapted to project into the path of rotation of the crank handles Zitto serve as stops therefor, and in this manner'wh'en the frames 'or 'racks 16 have been elevated they will be held in such adjusted position.
WVhen the tobacco leaves have been picked from the plants in the field the same are strung on poles as usual, and thesepol'es and placed upon the racks or frames 16 651 'the suspension of the tobacco leavesf th'e racks or trays 16 being lowered to permit and with despatch, and at the same time minimizes labor for this purpose. 1
The cleats 15 guide the racks or frames 16 in the frame A when the same are being raised and lowered, as Will be clearly obvious.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of operation of the'device Will be clearly under- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. G.
afia ion has been omittedygfi stood, and therefore a more extended expla- What is claimed is?- In a drier of the class described, a frame having a plurality of-internal vertically dis- .posed guideways, series of racks arranged in" the respective guideways for movement th erein, flexible connections between the "racks of the respectlve series forjoining the same in trains pulleys mounted in the frame at the top and opposite ends thereof medially of the guideways, pulleys journaled in the uppermost racks of the series,
cables each fixed to the top of the frame and trained over the pulleys on theuppermost racks and the frame respectively, and hand operable Windlass'es journaled in the frame at the bottom thereof'and having the other ends of the cables connected thereto." a
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 'in presence of two Witnesses.
