ANCHOR-PROJECTILE.
l' No. 849,205.
Specification of Letters Patent.
lfatented April 2, 1907.
Application filled July 27, 1906. Serial No. 328,130.
T all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that l, EDWIN S. CLOUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1 n Anchor-Projectiles, of which the following 1s a specification.
My invention has for its primary object to provide a simple and efficient device of the above type which is especially adapted for use 1n projecting and anchoring a life-line to establish connection between a grounded vessel and the shore.
With the above and other objects referred to hereinafter in view the invention resides in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as set forth in this specication and dened in the appended claims.
ln the accomp any'ng drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention, showing the same loaded in a gun for projection. Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections taken on lines 2 2 and 3 3, respectively, of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view.
With reference to the drawings numeral 1 indicates a projectile formed with a chambered head ortion 2 and a hollow stem 3, the latter being of suitable diameter to fit in the bore of a gun, as 3'.
Mounted on the projectile are engaging members, as fiukes 4, which are preferably swingably supported on respective pivots 5, seated in ribs 6, which extend longitudinally of the head portion 2, the members normally lying in retracted positions in the channels between respective ribs 6 and having base extensions 4', which project inwardly through suitable-slots provided in the head portions. l
Located within the projectile 1 is a drawbar, as 7, having lateral extensions 8 at its rear end, which project through longitudinallyextending slots 2', provided in the stem 3. l
Pivotally connected each with the exten- -sion 4' of a respective member 4 are links, as
9 and 9', the former of which extend to and are pivotally connected with the draw-bar 7, while the latter are pivoted together at their inner ends and engaged in a suitable aperture 7', provided in said bar, as shown in Fig. 4.
Reference-nulneral ll indicates an annular member slidably fitting upon the stem 3 and having opposite forwardly-projecting arms l2, which have their forward end portions slidably engaged in suitable apertures provided in the head portion 2. The arms 12 are provided with longitudinally-extending slots 8', which receive the projecting end portions of the extensions 8 of the draw-bar, thereby providing a slip connection which permits of a primary movement of member 11 before eifecting movement of said bar.
The i rope or life-line, as 14, is connected with member l 1 in any convenient manneras, for example, by means of a chain 15, fastened to said line and engaged with suitable studs 16, secured to said member at opposite points.
In operation the projectile is loaded in the gun with the engaging members 4 in retracted positions, as indicated in Fig. l. Upon discharging the gun the projectile 1 during its initial movement takes up the life-line in a comparatively gradual manner, owing to the relatively sliding movement between stem 3 and member 11, until the extensions 8 are engaged by the forward end walls of slots 8', when the tension on the outgoing portion of the line will tend to retain said member against movement with the projectile, and thereby, through the medium of draw-bar 8 and the links 9 and 9', swing the engaging members 4 outwardly on their pivots. v
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America,
1. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member movably mounted thereon, means for attaching a life-line movable on said projectile, to move said member, and a Slip connection between said means and the member.
2. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member swingably mounted thereon, means for attaching a life-line movable on said projectile, a slip connection associated with said means, and a 4link connection between said member and said slip connection.
3. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member movably mounted thereon, means for attaching a rope movable upon said projectile, and means operatively connecting said member with IOO said attaching means permitting of an independent movement of the latter.
4. A device of the type set `forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member movablv mounted thereon, a draw-bar connected with said member, means for attaching a rope movable upon said projectile, and a slip connection between said means and the bar.
5. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member movably mounted thereon, a draw-bar connected With said member, an annular member for attaching a rope movable on said projectile, and a slip connection between said. attaching member and the bar.
6. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member swingably mounted thereon, a draw-bar connected with said member having an angular extension, and means for attaching a rope slidable on said projectile and having an arm provided With a slot receiving said extension.
7. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile formed with a -cliambered head portion and a hollow stem, anengaging member swingably mounted on said head portion, a draw-bar Within said projectile connected with said member and having an angular extension, and an annular member for attaching a rope slidable on said stem and i having an arm provided With a slot receiving said extension.
8. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member movably mounted thereon, a movable means in said projectile connected to said member, and a line operatively connected to said movable means for effecting movement thereof.
9. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, having a head portion and a stem, an engaging member movably mounted on said head portion, and means in said head portion connected with said member to operate the same, and means having a lifeline attached thereto secured to said first means.
10. A device of the type set forth comprising a projectile, an engaging member mounted thereon for movement to relatively projected and retracted positions and having an extension arranged in said projectile, and
means connected to the extension of said member for operating said member.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 14th day of July, 1906.
