.Be it known that I, ORLANDO ORITTENDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brushes, and more particularly to that type which are formed of some elastic material, such as rubber.

The object of the invention is to provide a brush of this character in which the teeth are peculiarly formed, so as to be stiff and take a good hold upon the skin when the brush is moved in one direction and to be soft and flexible when the brush is moved in a direction approximately at right angles thereto.

A further object is to so design the brush that it will be very efficient in operation and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the brush. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of the base, showing the formation of the teeth and their staggered arrangement in diagonal rows; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the back of the brush.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The numeral 1 designates the back of the brush, which may be given any desired shape and is formed of any suitable material, such as rubber. In the present instance the back 1 is approximately elliptical and has the handle 2 secured to the upper face thereof. At the point where the handle is attached to the back the latter is formed with the thickened portion constituting the raised seat 3, which prevents the, back from cracking and serves to stiffen the same around the handle. In the specific formation of the handle 2- it will be observed that the outer end of the same branches outwardly in opposite directions, as

seen at 4, the body portion of the handle being adapted to fit between any two fingers of the hand, while the outwardly-projecting portions 4 prevent the handle from slipping through the fingers. The teeth 5, which are located upon the lower face of the back 1, are preferably made integral with the same and have opposite flat faces and outwardly tapering or converging side edges, so as to be stiff when the brush is moved in one direction and soft and pliable when the brush is moved in a direction at approximately right angles thereto.

The teeth 5 are arranged in parallel and preferably diagonal rows, and the flat sides of the teeth in adjacent rows face each other and are parallel, so as to cause the teeth to have a unitary action. It is to be noted that the teeth 5 are arranged in parallel rows and that the teeth in each row are all arranged in alinement with each other, with their tapering edges close in contact at the base and with their side faces flush with each other. l/Vith this construction it will be apparent that the operator can have either a stiff brush or a soft and flexible brush, according to the manner in which he manipulates the same.

In the construction of the brushes the larger sizes will be employed as bath-brushes, while the smaller sizes may be employed as face or complexion brushes.

The construction of the handle as above described enables the brush to be quickly and firmly grasped in such a manner that it can be readily released when desired.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A brush provided with a plurality of rows of elastic teeth, each tooth being formed with flat opposite faces and side edges that taper or converge in an outward direction, the teeth in each row setting close to each other at their bases, edge to edge with their opposite fiat faces flush with each other and all the teeth of one row being in line with the other teeth of the same row, all the rows of teeth extending parallel, and continuously in a straight line.
