THE NORRIS PETERS cm. WASHINGTON, n c
UNTTE GUSTAV KOCH, OF ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA.
SLED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed February 17,1906. Serial No, 301,673.
To all whom (It may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV K001i, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bob-Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bobsleds, and has for its object the provision of means for journaling the bolster on the sled-knees, and par ticularly to means for limiting the vertical movement of the sled-runners, my invention being an improvement of the structure shown in Patent No. 748,194, granted to myself on December 29, 1903.
The details of my invention will be particularly described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a bobslcd, showing my invention thereon, Fig. 2, a fragmentary side view showing my improved journal; Fig. 3, a view partly in sec tion of the journal and bolster-plate; Fig. 4, a view showing in detail one of the journalboxes and bolster-plates dismembered, and Fig. 5 a view of a modification of the bolsterplate.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A represents the runners, on each of which is secured a knee B of any desired construction, the ones shown in the drawings being preferred because of their inexpensive con struction, strength, and lightness of weight, said knees being particularly described in the patent mentioned above.
C represents a bar secured to the front of each knee B and having an eye 0 on its forward end to receive a bolt D, passed therethrough and through an eye a on the front end of each runner A, a tubular rod E being provided to fit on said bolt D between the eyes a on runners A.
F represents the draft-pole secured on bolt D between eyes a and c at each side of the front of the runner.
G represents a journal-box secured on the top of each knee B and made in two parts 9 and g. The lower part 9 is formed with a semicylindrical bearing-surface g, while the upper p art g is formed with a mating bearingsurface 9 and a semicircular depression 9 in the outer end thereof.
H represents the bolster-plates to which are secured the ends of the transverse beam or bunk I. In Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings I have shown the bolster-plate as being a flat structure with the end of the bunk secured on the top side thereof; but in Fig. 5 is shown a modification of my bolster-plate in which it is formed with a socket h to receive a tenon on the end of the bunk.
J represents a stud-shaft or trunnion on the outer end of each bolster-plate H to ride in the journal-bearings formed by bearingsurfaces g and g and having a flange j on the upper side of its outer end to fit into de pression g. The flange is slightly shorter than one-half of the circumference of the shaft J, so as to admit of a slight oscillation of the runners in passing over irregularities encountered in the road.
K represents a hook on the inner end of each bolster-plate H, L brace-rods secured to said hook and to the knee B, and M a bracerod connecting the hook K and the front end of the adjacent runner.
All the parts of my invention except the specific structure of the stud-shaft or trunnion J and ournal-box G have been 1 described. in Patent No. 748,194, mentioned above, and I therefore limit my claims herein to the structure not shown in the former' patent.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A journal-box formed of two portions having mating semicylindrical bearing-surfaces, one of said portions having a semicircular depression therein, in combination with a shaft journaled in said box and having a flange thereon to fit in and slightly shorter than said depression, substantially as shown and described.
2. A journal-box formed of two portions having mating semicylindrical bearingsur faces, one of said portions having a semicircular depression at the end of the bearing surface, in combination with a shaft journaled in said box and having a flange on its end to fit in and slightly shorter than said depression, substantially as shown and de scribed.
3. In combination with a sled-knee, a journal-box secured thereto consisting of two portions having mating semicylindrical bearing-surfaces, the upper of said portions having a semicircular depression at the outer end of its bearing-surface, aplate for holding the Lil bolster having a hook at one end, a studshaft secured to the other end of said plate adapted to seat in the semicylindrical bearings and having a flange on its outer end to seat in the depression aforesaid and formed shorter than said depression, and brace-rods secured. to said knee and the hook on the plate, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV KOCH.
