GASTER.` Y No. 322,308.- Patented July` 14, 1885.
' i UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.`
SIGISMUND M. MICHELSON, OF MILWAUKEE, VISCONSIN.
CASTER.
SPECIFICAIO forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,308, dated July 14, 1885.
Application tiled March 30, 1885. (Model.)
To all whom it may concer-n.; Be it known that l, SIGIsMUND M. MICHEL- soN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to casters for trunks and other articles of furniture; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved device inverted. Fig. 2 is a like view of the cup or shell. Fig. Sis a similar View with the protecting-plate removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my device with the cup or shell removed. Fig.
5 is a perspective view of the protecting-plate. Fig. 6 is an inverted perspective view of the roller-bearings. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of my device, and Fig. 8 is a perspective View of my device in position for use.
My present invention is, in part, an improvement on the caster patented to me on the 3d day of March, 1885, and numbered 313, 097, its chief advantage consisting in the addition of the device for decreasing friction, as well as in some slight structural points of improvement whereby the cost of manufactu re is decreased and greater efciency secured.
A represents the shell of well77 or my device, and in the form illustrated has two arms or lugs, A', to assist in attaching the shell to the under side of trunks or other flat-bottomed articles of furniture. The top plate of the shell A is marked a, and from its center there projects downward a vertically perforated axle, a'. A
D is the revolving protecting plate of my device, and has a central perforation, d, to receive the end of the bolt or pivot E after the same has passed through the vertical perforation in the axle a', and is cut away at one side, as at di; and on either side of this cut-away portion are depending lugs or bearings D' D', hollowed out on their upper surfaces, as at d' d', to receive the journal f of the roller F.
G is a sleeve or hub, which encircles the aXle a' of the shell A, and which is formed with a bifurcated extension, the arms g g of which straddle the roller F, and which arms have downwardextending projections g' g' at or near their ends, which iit into the depressions d' d' in the bearings D' D', and which are centrally notched, as at g2 g2, so as to rest on the ends of the rollerjournal f when the parts have all been put together, as shown in Fig. 7.
Bis a journal which extends from the lower part of the sleeve or lug 'G to a bridge, g3, which connects on top the extreme ends of the two arms g g, and on this journal B is mounted an anti-friction roller, C, the space between the arms g g being partly filled up, as shown at g4 in Fig. 7, so that the'anti-friction roller, 65
while, left free to revolve on its journal, is kept in place thereon between this part g* and the bridge'gs, and'wholly hidden from sight, being inclosed within theA shell A. Vhen these parts have all been put together, as shown in Fig. 7, the projecting end of the bolt or pivot E is upset in any suitable manner, thereby securing" all parts of my improved device iirmly together in proper operative position. j
While I have shown the arms or lugs A' as a convenient means of securing my casters to trunks, o., it is obvious that they may be sel cured in any other manner desired, and that the shell A may be cast with the corner-iron of a trunk, as in my Patent No. 280,061, or with an upward-extending cup-flange for receiving the legs of articles of furniture, as shown in my Patent N 0. 313,097, or varied in an infinite variety yof ways, this having no bearing on the essential features of my present invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a revolving caster, the combination of an inclosing-shell with a revolving perforated protecting-plate pivoted thereto, and a rollerbearing frame revolving on a central vertical axle within said shell, the pivot of said plate passing through said axle, and said framecarrying the caster-roller, which projects down- Ico withthe shell A and the roller-bearing frame G g g g3, of the journal B,Vand anti-friction roller C, and the easter-roller F, mounted on a journal secured to the frame G, substantially as set forth.
3. In a revolving easter, the combination of the shell A, with axle a, perforated protecting-plate D, with bearings D D", hollowed out, as at d d, on their upper surfaces, journal f, roller F, roller-bearing frame having sleeve G, and arins g g, with notched projeotions g g2, resting on the journal f, Within the hearings D D', and carrying an anti-friction roller bearing against the under side of the top plate of the shell, and the pivot E, substantially as set forth.
4. In a revolving caster, the combination of an inclosing-shell with a rigid central vertical axle, a roller-bearing frame having. a vertically-perforated hub revolving on said rigid vertical axle carrying a roller projecting beneath said shell, with an anti-friction roller journaled in said frame above the journal of the caster-roller, and bearing upon the under surface of the top plate of said shell, the axle of the anti-friction roller being independent of the central axle of the device, and the roller-frame revolving around a fixed axis, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the County of Milwaukee and State of ViS- consin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
