FRANCIS A. RICH, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
WHEELBARROW.
W AJMIHILAJTIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,591, dated November 4, 188%.
Application filed March 4, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. RIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Barrows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable" others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the shoe S. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line X X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a View of barrow inverted, showing the slide U.
Similar letters refer to simi lar parts th roughout the several views.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for wheelbarrows, consisting of a shoe attached to the wheel for use upon snow or ice, and so'constructed as toequalize the burden of the load by causing the weight of same to rest upon or mainly upon the shoe, thus relieving the workman of the weight and easing his labor. To specify, G is the barrow; A, the wheel attached thereto by the axle B. Fastened to said Wheel by the bolts 0 C is the shoe S, having the recess K, into (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
which the wheel sets.
(No model.)
Said shoe is provided with lug L at a point near the inner end thereof, intended to bear against the rubber cushion I, which is made adjustable by means of the slide U and set screw H, (or a spring may be used.) The purpose of said cushion (or spring) is to relieve the Workman of anyjarring orjolting motion resulting from any unevenness of the roadway, and the object of providing a bearing upon the shoe at this point is to equalize the weight of the load. Said shoe is bottomed by the tire or band N.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
- 1. The combination, with the barrow G and the wheel A, of the shoe S, fitted thereto, as shown and described.
2. As an attachment to wheelbarrows, the shoe S, having the recess K, the lug L, and the tire-band N, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the barrow G, the wheel A, and the shoe S, having the lug L, of the slide U, held by the set-screw H, and having the cushion I, adapted to bear upon said lug L, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS A. RICH.
