Description

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER S. PLUMMER AND JOHN M. WOOD, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,609, dated October 20, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, OLIVER S. PLUMMER and JOHN M. WVooD, citizens of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of XVayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to buggies and light vehicles.
Our invention consists in the peculiar construction and combinations of the devices, hereinafter described, for hanging the body of a buggy or carriage to the running gear of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of our improvements and their connections. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a cone-shaped journal. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a hanger-arm.
In Fig. 1, A A represent the ordinary form of side bar in use in buggies and carriages, and O O the axles.
B B are the body-sills, and D D are crosssills, to which the spring and its attachments are fixed.
E E are longitudinal bars curved laterally inward at their central portions, and secured at their ends to the cross-sills D D by brackets attached to the under surface of the same near its ends.
The ends of the curved bars E Eterminate in a screw-thread, c, and have their bearings in a taper or cone-shaped journalbearing, a, which is inserted in the brackets s s, the journal-bearing at having a square opening, which fits upon the bar E, allowing the bar E a partial revolution along with the journal-bearing a in the bracket 8.
F is a curved or cradle spring, and is placed centrally between the side bars, A A, secured to the cross-sill D at each end by a hinged bracket, 02. A cross, 2, is rigidly attached to the center of the spring F, at the apex of its curve, having lateral arms 2' i, projecting laterally, to which are affixed the hinged couplings m, which connect the arms 2 z with similar lateral armsyi i, by means of axis-pins 0 0, constituting a hinged connection between the spring F and bars E E, at or near the center of each and at right angles to both.
G G G G are curved hangerarms, as seen in Fig. 4, provided with a square opening, h, at one end to receive the curved bar E, and a hinged clip at the opposite end, K, by which it is attached to the side bar, A. These hanger-arms are secured to the curved arms E E, near their ends, as. seen at h h h h, and support the weight of the body of the ylhe screw-thread c, on the outer end of the bar E, is furnished with a screw-nut, d,which is in contact with the end of the cone-shap journal-bearing a, and by turning home the nut the journal-bearing a is forced into the opening in the bracket 8 to take up any play or lost motion that may occur from the wearing away of the hearing or the bracket.
The spring F receives the entire weight of the body at its center and at its ends, and at whatever place within the confines of the body or its sill the weight may be placed the whole body is equally depressed, the parts having a tendency one with the other to distribute and equalize the pressure throughout the length of the spring F.
Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The spring F, provided with arms t t and hinged brackets n n, constructed and operating substantially as herein described.
2. The curved arms E E, provided with journal-bearings a a, screw-nut d, and screwthread 0, when combined with the spring F by hinged couplings m m and arms 2" i, as herein described.
3. The combination of the side bar, A, the hanger-arm G, and bar E, with the spring F, in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER S. PLUMMER. JOHN M. WOOD.
