This invention relates to the ribbon-vi brating mechanisms of type-writing machines in which. the ribbon is vibrated to cover and uncover the printing-point and in which means are rovided for shifting the ribbon to bring di erent widthwise portions thereof into use. The object of the invention isto provide simple and inexpensive means readily attachable to existln particularly those ofthe well-known Underwood construction, for effecting the width: Wise shifting' of the ribbon.
The ribbon in saidmachine is .threade through the upper end of a verticalreciproeating vibrator, and the latter is usually at-- tached at its lower end to a lever, which is actuated by a device provided upon the universal-bar frame, .thelatter reciprocating at the type-strokes. By moving the bar 20 with the/ lever 17 31 to the right, Figh i, the wrist 25, which is more remote than the wrist 28 from the fulcrum' 18, is moved into the slot 26, whereby the lever is given a minimum vibration at the type-strokes and the carrier 14 is thrown u only far enough to enable the upper colorand 5 to cover the printingpoint.
When the bar 20 and the lever are moved to the left, Fig. 5, the wrist is withdrawn from the slot 26 and the lower wrist 28 is moved into engagement with the slot 29in the other arm 30, whereby the lever is given a maximum vibration at the type-strokes and the carrier 14 is thrown u sufficiently to 6 to cover the printing-point.
The slots 26 and .29 are sufliciently high to accommodate the up-and-down movements of the lever caused by the up-and-down shifting of the carriage-rail 8.
At the keyboard of the machine are provided key-bearing arms 32 33 upon the front end of a horizontal rock-shaft 34, which carries at its rear end a crank 35, the latter having a wrist or rojection 36 to work loosely ina slot37 in t e end of a bar 20, so that by pushing down either key the bar 20 may be shifted to either right or left, as the case may be, and the corresponding color-band caused to cover the Tinting-point at the typestrokes. 'The 3 0t 37 extends vertically far enough' to accommodate the up-and-doWn shifting movements of the bar 20, due to its being mounted upon the ca ital shifting frame 8 9. The bar 20 is hel at either extreme of its movement by means of a detentspring 38, secured upon the framework and cooperating with a beveled detent arm or crank 39, fixed upon the rock-shaft 34.
It will be noticed that very little change is required in order to add my improvements to existing machines and that the objection heretofore experienced has been overcome, of liability of derangement or faulty action of the light and delicate parts comprising the ribbon-vibrating mechanism.
Variations maybe resorted to in respect to certain features of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. v
Having-thus described my invention, I
1. ,In a type-writing machine having types and a universal bar reciprocated at the typestrokes, the combination with a ribbon-carrier, of a lever connected to the carrier aiid provided on opposite sides with wrists at unequal distances from its fulcrum, hearings on opposite sides ofsaid lever and engageable by said .wrists and connected to said universal bar to reciprocate therewith, and means for shifting said lever from side to side to engage and disengage the wrists with the bearlngs . 2. In a type-writing machine having types and a universal bar reciprocated at the typestrokes, the combination with a ribbon-can rier, of a lever connected to the carrier and provided on opposite sides with wrists at unequal distances from its fulcrum, hearings on opposite sides of said lever and eng'ageable by eaid wrists and connected to said universal bar to reciprocate therewith, and means for shifting said lever from side. to side to engage and disengage the Wrists with the bearings; said carrier extending upwardly from said lever and loosely guided at its upper portion to permit it to rock from side to side to accommodate the lateral shifting movements of the lever and also to permit it to be reciprocated up and down by the lever to cause the ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point..
3. In a type-writing machine having types and a universal bar reciprocated at the typestrokes, the combination with a ribbon-carrier, of a lever connected to the carrier and provided on opposite sides with wrists at unequal distances from its fulcrum, hearings on opposite sides of said lever and engageable by said wrists and connected to said universal bar to reciprocate therewith, a shifter whereon said lever is mounted, said shifter movable in a direction transverse to the lever to shift the latter from side to side to engage and disengagethe wrists with the bearings, a finger-piece for saidv shifter, and a detent forholding the shifter at either end of its movement.
4'. In a type-writing machine having types and a universal bar which is reciprocated at the typestrokes, the comblnation oi a'ribboncarrier, a lever connected to said ribbon-carrier to reciprocate the same, a shifterdmr upon which said lever is fulcrumed, said bar mounted to shift in a direction transverse to said lever, wrists projecting from opposite sidesof said lever at different distances from its fulcrum, and arms connected to said universal bar, one upon each side of said lever, said arms having bearings engageable alternately by said wrists.

In a type-writing machine having types; and a universal bar which is rcciprocated at the type-strokes, the combination of a ribbonearrier, a lever connected to said ribbon-carrier to reciprocate the same, a' shifter-bar upon which said lever is fulcrumed, said bar mounted to shift in a direction transverse to said lever, wrists projecting from opposite sides of said lever, at different distances from its fulcrum, and arms connected to said universal bar, one upon each s1de of said lever, said arms having bearings enga eable alternately by said wrists, and a roc -shaft having a crankiconnected tosaid bar for moving said lever from side'to side to engage either of its wrists with its associated bearing and disengage the other wrist from its associated bearing, said rock-shaft extending from said I bar to the front of the machine and provided the type-strokes, the combination of a ribbonat its forward end with a fingeriece. 6. In a type-'writingmachine having types, a universal bar reci rocated at the typestrokes, a laten and a frame whereon said platen sh ts for writing capital and'lowercase letters, the combination with a ribbonv mounted, said shifter mounted on said shift ing frame and also movable in a direction 3 transverse to theleverto shift the latter'from side to side to'engage and disengage the "wrists with; the slotted arms, and a fingerpiece upon the framework of the machine and'looselyengaged to said shifter to accommodate the movements ofsaid shiftingiframe.
10.--In a type-writing machine having types, a universal bar reciprocated at the type-strokes, a platen and a frame whereon said platen shifts for writing capital and lower-case letters, the combination with a ribbon-carrier, of a lever connected to said ribbon carrier to reciprocate the same, a shifter-bar upon which i said, lever is fulcrumed, said bar mounted on said platenshifting frame to shift also in a direction transverse to said levers, wrists projecting from opposite sides of said lever at different distancesfrom its fulcrum, arms connected to said universal bar one upon each side ofsaid lever, said arms having slots extending in the direction of the shifting movement of said platen and engageable alternately by said wrists, a rock-shaft mounted upon the framework and having a crank loosely con- &
