To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN L.'WA GNEn, a citizen of the United States, resldmg 1n Mount Vernon, in the countyof Westchester and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.

In said Underwood machine types 1 are mounted upon the forward ends of bars 2, pivoted upon a rod 3, mounted in 'a segment 4, the latter having radial slots 5 to receive the type-bars, and the latter striking against the front side of a platen (5.- The platen is supported upon a carriage (not shown). which runs 'upon a rail 7. The parts 9, 10, and 11 all cooperate to prevent access of dust or grit to the type-bar slots 5, whereby the latter are kept clear and constant freedom of action of the type-bars is assured. r

The dust-shield is preferably mounted air of tongues 13', extending forwardly om the usual universal-bar frame 14, said tongues extending through horizontal slots 15, formed in the vertical wall of the segment 4.. The shield may be attached to said tongues by means of screws 16 .and ears 17, the latter detachably secured to the vertical segmental plate 10. *To the frame 14 is fixed the usual segmental universal bar 18 by means of arms 19, formed on the frame and riveted at 20 to cars 21, formed on the universal bar.. The latter is operated on the type-bars and at the completionofeach grmting stroke. of the latter moves backard for the purpose of feeding the carriage by the well-known means. The dust-shield,-

It will be seen that the curved flange v9 may itself be employed as a universal bar and t e segment 18 omitted, the flange 9 being in that case struck by the type-bars and forced back thereby at the last portions of the printing stroke; but the returning-spring and other usual appurtenances of the uni versal-bar frame may be retained. Having, thus described my invention, I claim-- a I I 1.
