Description

PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS D. BAUSHER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRE-KINDLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 26, 1907.
Application filed October 29, 1906. Serial No. 341,135.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. BAUSHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of 1 Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers, of'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new compound adapted to be used as a fire-kindler or in cases where an ordinary fire is not required to furnish sufiicient heat by its own combustion for temporary or short-time fires.
It is especially useful where a quick fire is desired, as it can be used in any quantities, being put up in economical form and free from danger of explosion.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions specified, viz: refined coal-oil, one hundred gallons; tallow, seventy pounds; paraffin, twenty pounds; rosin-soap, eighty pounds; sawdust, four bushels; pulverized charcoal, one bushel.
The oil, tallow, soap, and paraffin are placed in a vessel and boiled until the entire mass is reduced to a liquid. It is then allowed to cool considerably, and while still in liquid form, but sufficiently hot, the sawdust and charcoal, which have previously been mixed together, are laced in the hot li uid and the whole mass t oroughly mixed. W hile still in a plastic state the compound is molded into blocks of the desired shape and size and allowed to cool thoroughly. The oil acts as the initial flamer, and before its force has been spent the paraffin and tallow are inflamed, and before this has been consumed the charcoal and sawdust are also burning.
It will be seen that while my device is intended more particularly as a kindler for use in building fires it will also serve as a fuel where a temporary fire is re uired or where it is desired to produce a quic fire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described composition of matter consisting of refined coal-oil, tallow, paraffin, rosin-soap, sawdust and pulverized charcoal substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. The herein-described composition of matter for use as a fire-kindler consisting of refined coal-oil one hundred gallons, tallow seventy pounds, paratfin twenty pounds, rosinsoap eighty pounds, sawdust four bushels and pulverized charcoal one bushel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS D. BAUSHER.
