Description
THQMAS R. TAYLOR, (')F-BMRO'DHEAD, WISCONSIN. 11mm raam No. 84,779, mea December s, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN IL FOR. RAILROAD-RAILS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the san-1e.
To all whom 'it 'm/zl/y conce/rn Bc it known that I, THOMAS R. TAYLOR, of Brodhead, in the county of Green, and State of Wisconsin, have inventeda new and improved Pile for Railroad- Rails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a v full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
rlhe object of this invention is to provide an improved pile for forming rails to be made of steel and iron, whereby it is designed to eifect a better disposition of the two metals, and amore perfect weld of the saine.
VIt consists of a `T-formed bar of steel,`either rolled or cast, the Vertical portion of which is enlarged at the point of junction with the top part, and also at the bottom, and of an iron bar of about twice the length of the steel bar, which is formed preferably by rolling with one face to't the sides of the steel bar below the horizontal part, and which is bent, in the middle, sidewise, sc -as to-loop around the end of the steel bar,
which latter is inserted endwise between the two parts,
to form the pile. -In the drawings'- Figure l represents a cross-section of my improved pile;
Similar letters ofrefe'rence indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a steel bar, of T-form, the vertical part of which is enlarged at the junction of the same with the horizontal part, and also at the bottom, which may be formed in any suitable manner.
B represents an iron bar, which is provided with one face to fit the sides of the steel bar, below the horizontal part thereof, and is made of .twice the length of the said steel bar, and bent in the centre so as to double around the end of the, steel bar, which is inserted endwise between the two parts, before they are quite closed together, after which they maybe closed, forming thereby a compact pile, as shown in the drawings.
As will bereadily understood, the joints may then,
after the pile has been heated, be provided -with any suitable flux and rolled into a finished rail, as shown in iig. 3, having a steel face to resist the action of the wheels, and athin vertical central s trip of steel, protected against the vertical and lateral strain by the iron portion thereof.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv The improved pile for forming railroad-rails, when 'constructed and arranged as herein described.
Also, as a new article of manufacture, railroad-rails, when produced from the improved pile herein' described, as and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: THOMAS R. TAYLOR.
EDwA-nn RTAYLOR, E. J. HUTOBINsoN.
