w ll air/writ vita-ta x/iztccrn:
Be it known that I, VhLLrAM H. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Man shall, in the county of Harrison and State of. Texas, have invented a new and useful Packing for Doors and Like Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the doors or other closures of air-tight chambers, more particularly to those employed in refrigerators, coldstorage apartments, and the like, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better Understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and'claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designatlng characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical op eration, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention within the scope of the" appended claims.
The figure is a sectional view of a portion of a refrigerator, including .the doorwayopening and door, with the improvement applied to the joints between the door and the walls of the doorway-opening.
The improvement herein shown and described may be applied to any structure req uiring an air-tight closure, but is more particularly applicable to the doorways and other apertures of refrigerators and like structures, and for the purpose of illustra tion is shown applied to a structure of this class, in which the walls 10 and door 11 are of the usual construction, the door being hinged at 12 and provided engaging a keeper 14. I
The doorway-opening is surrounded by a recess 15, and bearingupon one of the faces of this recess is a packmg member formed from a strip 16 of flexible material, such as sheet-rubber, folded over upon itself longitudinally, and with a filling 17 of flexible materialsuch-as rubber, hemp, cotton, wool,

folded strip and next the fold of the same.
The packing member is arranged in the recess 15, with the folded edges in the corner of the same, as shown in the figure, and secured in place by bearing-strips or cleats 18,
or seat for the edges of the door 11, the strips and door being preferably correspondingly beveled, as shown, to insure a closer joint between'the parts. The packing members are thus firmly secured in place and present the enlarged filler edge to the door 11, whereby a yielidable surface is provided upon which the door closes and effectually prevents the passage of all air, as will'be obvious.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A structure of the class described hitV-n ing a doorway-opening provided with a surrounding recess, a packing appliance within said recess and formed of a flexible strip folded upon. itself longitudinally and with a filling of yieldable material disposed within the fold, holding-strips attached to one wall of the recess and bearing upon. the engaging edges of said strip and with one face presented toward the doorway-opening, and a door for closing'said opening and adapted to enter the recess and engage both the holding-strip and the packing.
2. A structure of the class described having a doorway-opening provided with a surrounding recess, a packing appliance within said recess and formed of a flexible strip folded upon itself longitudinally and with a filling of yieldable material disposed within the fold, holding-strips attached to a wall of the or the likedisposed between the sides of the g the inner faces of the latter forming the face recess and bearing upon the engaging edges of said strip and with one face beveled and presented toward the doorway-opening, and
a door for, closing'said opening and adapted to enter therecess and engageboth the hold ing-strip and the packing the edges of the door being beveled to correspond to and engage said beveled strips.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. CARTER.
