This invention 1s an improved press for punching, cutting, and shaping metal or other materials, relating more especially to such devices as are operated by a hand-lever, and in which the Operating-tool is struck a blow with a hammer or other device to perform the required operation.
The object of the invention primarily is the production of a simple and effective press in which both the movable and stationary tools or dies may be readlly changed to suit the character of the work required, also providing for automatically locking the movable tool on grasping the hand-lever employed in reciprocating it.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved press, partly in section, and showing a punch and a die in position therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cutting-tool which may be substituted for the punch shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the female punchingdie, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a blank die used in connection with the cutting-tool of Fig. 3.
The invention comprises a base 1, preferably of circular shape, as shown, with an opening 2, passing vertically through the center thereof, said opening being counterbored at its upper end to provide an enlarged recess for .receiving an interchangeable and stationary die 3, the preferred form of the latter being in the nature of a disk having a conical bottom face 4, conforming to the seat in the base 1.
The base 1 is extended at the rear side, where it is provided with an upwardly-projecting portion or post 5, providing means for pivotally connecting a hand-lever 6, the latter being constructed with an inclined inner end 7, which is bifurcated at its extremity for embracing each side of the post 5 and pivotally connected therewith by a cross-pin 8. The lever 6 has an opening passing vertically through it over the center of the base, which is preferably square in cross-section for receiving the shank of a cutting, punching, or shaping tool 9, said tool having an enlarged head 10 at its upper end acting as a stop to limit its further inward movement when a recess 11 in the shank thereof alines with a locking-bolt, hereinafter describeda The head 10 also provides means for striking the tool with a hammer or other device when the tool has been lowered by the lever in contact with the work. The outer end of the lever 6 is formed with the usual handhold 12 and with a downwardly-extending car 13 adjacent thereto, to which is pivoted at 14 a bell-crank lever 15, the Outer arm of the latter being formed with a rounded enlargement 16, arranged under the handhold 12 and providing a finger-grip for the same when the lever 6 is depressed.
Projecting from the under face of the lever 6, adjacent to the tool-opening, are lugs 17, having alining openings in which is slidably mounted a locking-bolt 18, the latter having an extension 19, pivotally connected to the short arm of the bell-crank lever 15 at a point 20. A spring 21, secured to the enlargement 16 of the bell-crank lever 15, presses on the under face of the handhold 12 and normally retains the locking-bolt 18 withdrawn from the tool 9, as illustrated in Fig. 1. However, by grasping the handhold 12, with the fingers passing underneath the finger-grip and drawing them together prearatory to reciprocating the tool 9 the locking-bolt, through the action of the intermediary connection, will be forced inio the alining recess 11 in the tool-shank, thus securely locking the tool to the lever.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of tool 9 which may be substituted for that shown in the press, said tool having a head 10 and a recess 11, the same as those provided in the punch, differing only in that the latter tool is constructed with a chisel cutting edge.
In Figs. 4 and 5 are shown female stationary dies 3 and 3*, respectively, the former being constructed with the central punchingopening of circular shape and the latter having its operating-face blank.
It is obvious that both the movable tool or die and the immovable die may be variously modified to suit the character of the work required, also changes made in the construc- IIO tion of my improved press falling Within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A press comprising a hand-lever having a handhold at the outer end thereof, said lever having means for receiving a tool, and means operable at the handheld oi the lever for locking the tool and lever together.
'2. A press comprising a hand-lever having a handheld at the outer end thereof, said lever having means for receiving a tool, and a finger-grip pivotal-1y connected to the lever adjacent to said handhold operable to lock the lever and tool together.
3. A press comprising a base, a hand-lever ivota'l ly connected with the base having a and-hold at the-outer end thereof, and means opposed to said handhold operable to look a tool to the lever.
4. A press comprising a base, a lever pivo tally connected with the base having a vertical opening formed therein over the center of the base for receiving a tool, a locking-bolt "slidably mounted on the lever, and means operable to project the bolt to lock the tool and lever together.
5. A press comprising a base having a recess therein forming a seat for a stationary die, a lever pivotally connected with the base having a vertical opening therein arranged over said die, a locking-bolt slidably mount ed on the lever, and a finger-grip pivoted to the lever and connected with the locking-bolt operable to project said bolt in said opening,
; for the purpose described.
6. A press comprising a base having a re cess formed therein, a die seated in said recess, a lever pivotally connected with the base having an opening passing therethrough over the die, a tool constructed with a head and with a recess in the shank thereof passing through said opening, a locking-boltslidable on the lever in al-inement with the recess in the shank of the tool, and a finger-grip pivot ally connected to the lever operatmg to project said bolt into the recess of the tool to lock the tool and lever together.
7. A press comprisinga base, a lever pivot ally connected therewith having a vertical opening passing therethrough and a handhold at its outer end, a loclring bolt slidably mounted underneath the lever, a bell-crank lever pivotally connected with the lockingbolt, a finger-grip carried by the bell-crank lever opposed to said handheld-and operating to project the bolt into said opening, and means for withdrawing said bolt.
