CANCELlNG-PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 470,435, dated March 8, 1892.
App1ication filed .Tu1y 27, 1891. Seria1 N0. 400.858. (N0 model.)
T0 aZZ whom z't mag Concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN B. MORRIS and GEORGE MOG. MORRIS, eitizens of theUnited States, residing a1; Oinoinnati, Ohio, have invented new and usefu11mprovements in Canoeling-Punches, of whieh ehe following is a speeification.
Our invention relates to band pnnohing or oan'eeling presses, is object being to produce a simple, compact, and powerful rnaol1ine for use in banks and elsewhere for cance1ing cheeks 01 other documents, punching letters, receipts, &o., for stringing and making meta1 labels, and for simi1ar uses.
T0 this end it oonsiscs in the lever-punching apparatus constructed as herein described, adapted, as sho'wn, to the use of various punching-dies, seals, &e.
In the drawings herewith is exhibited an apparatus embodying our invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the same complete Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same; Figs. 3 anti 4., details of punohing and cutting dies used With the plunge1 as oecasion requires.
Referring now more particular1y to the drawings, A designates a base-plate, upon whieh is mounted a oolumn B, terminated above by two overhanging jaws bb' and extended midway a1: the side beneath the jaws by a gnide projeetion b The jaws b are piereed transversely for the reoeption of a short pivot-shaft a, and the guide projeetion b is bored vertieally for the reoeption and p1ay of a plunger C, which latter is provided at its lower end for the reeeption of interohangeable dies, cutters, seais, &c., and is pivotally conneeted above to an operating-eccentric, all as hereinafter more particularly deseribed.
The shaft a is journaled in and through the jaws Z), earrying an eooentric D betwe en the j aws and an operating-handle E upon the projecting end ab one side, both being rigidly con neoted to the shaft. The eocentrio is provided with a detaohable yoke and strap d, seating below in a slotted recess a1; the upper .end of the' plunger O, With pressure-surfaces in constant eontaet and held by a pin c. The 1ower end of oho plunger is recessed vertieally and provided Wih a set-sorew efor the reoeption and ho1ding of interehan geab1e dies o1 punehes, Which are provided with projecting shanks adapted to engage in the recess of the plunger and be retained by the set-sorew.
In the main figures of the drawings 1bhe apparatus is shown provided with a eheek-canceling outter consiscing of a block F, having an engaging shank, as above desoribed, and four outting-knives f, placed back to back in the form of a cross, as shown in the seotion, Fig. 4, taken 011 the line 0c of Fig. 2, and retained in the head F by set-screws, permitting their removal for resharpening, &:c. In Fig. 3 the head F is shown provided with two eyeletpunohes as eommonly used in stringing letters, reoeipts, checks, &e., the construotion otherwisebeing ti1e san1e as (hat of Lhe entter first desoribed.
F01 use wibh ehe outter or doub1e punch 01' similar devices intended to operate upon paper, oloth, leather, &o., in quantities, a platze G is provided, beneath whioh the mass of materiai is p1aced to be operated upon and Whieh by preventing the upward movement of the materia1 when the outte1 or punoh is to be withdrawn, enables the latter 130 readily e1ear ,itse1f. The plate G is reoessed at 1zhe front side 130 admit one of the cutting-knives 130 pass through it, and is seoured to the 001- umnB 01 130 the base-pla-te in any oonvenient manner, so as to be det-aehed when it is not needed in use.
The base-plate A is recessed ab a point beneath uhe plunger, so as to ad'mit a block 01: lead or wood, as indicated by the dotted. 1ines, 130 receive the impaet of the eutting-edges 01 punches. A female die may be alsoplaced therein when a male die is used with the plnnge1.
The upper part Of the p1unger A is sorewthreaded, as shown, and provided with a foll0wer-nut h, whioh serve's as an adjustable stop 130 limit the downward movement of the plunger, as may be desired, so that th.e autting-edges of the knives or punohes may not be injured by unneoessary pressure.
The operation of the machine is suffioiently obvious.
WVe may vary the construction by fomning the handle E as a part of or'attaohed to the ecoentrio D, in whioh case the spaee befsween the jaws b b may be widened to admit the handle, ancl the s'haft a mightbe a stationary pivot.
l/Ve claim as our invention and desire t0 seeure by Letters Patent 0f tl1e United States l. In a hand-press, the eombination of the supportingcolumn provided Witl1 a guideabutment, an operating-eccentrie journaled above the same, an actnating-handlea plumger reciprocating in and through said guide and having operating connection with the eccentrie, and an adjustable stop earried upon said plunger and limiting its downward reciproeation by eontaet With the guide-abutment, substantially as set forth.
2. In a, press 0f tl1e character described, the combination 0f a detachable block terminating' the plunger, provided with radial-plane soekets meeting a1; the center and extending outwardly through the block, plane rectangusite wall of the socket, substantially as sein fo1th.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto se our hands in the presenee of two subseribing 0 witnesses.
