The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN MALTPRESS, of Edger-ton, in the county of Rock, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick- Kilns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. r

The nature of my invention consists in portable grates or grate-bars, to be shifted from one kiln to' another, with dampers .or fines to be opened or closed at the pleasure of the fireman; and the object to be accomplished by this is the'g'overning and wholly controlling the draught or degree of heat escaping into any part of the kiln, thus burning the brick of uniform color and hardness,'and at the same time saving a large percentage in the consumption of fuel, and time in burning and cooling off any and all portions of the To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construc tion and operation.

A represents a brick-kiln, and

These grates are made in sections, and each section provided at both ends with rims, turned down and bent inwards, as shown in fig. 2, forming grooves or bearings for the dampers a a to slide to either side.

The dampers a a consist of bars or plates, sliding in the grooves already mentioned, on the under side of the grates, and series of cross-plates, covering or closing the space between the grate-bars.

To one of the bars of these dampers a lever, b, is pivoted, which runs under the grate and extends beyond the end of the kiln, being there also pivoted on a crossbar, a, at the mouth of the flue. I 7

It will be seen-that it requires as many dampers and levers as there are sections of the grate, and by this arrangement the whole or any part of the kiln can be made hotter or colder, as may be desired. It not being necessary to have the same temperature throughout the whole kiln, the heat can ihus be easily regulated and considerable fuel saved.

The grates being in sections, facilitates their removal from one kiln to.the other, if desired.

Having thus fully described my invention,

'What'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The inovable grates B B, constructed as described, in sections, and provided with dampers a a, said dampers being operated by levers b b, for the purpose ofincreasing or diminishing the heat in the Whole or a part of a brick-kiln, substantially as, and for the purposes herein set forth.
