TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: i
Be it known thatA I, CHARLES D. F. SMITH, ofGeneva, in the ciunty of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Stoves and Furnaces; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, referencebeing had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the'letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My said invention relates to that class of stoves and furnaces designed for heating purposes, in-which the {ire-chamber is surmounted by a vertical drum or chamber and a surrounding cylinder, leaving an annular spacev between, in which space a spiral inclined due isA constructed, through which the heat and smoke from the lfire or combustion-chamber pass circuitously and spirally upward around the said central, chamber before entening the pipe or chimney, for the purpose ofproducing'a more complete and perfect radiation of the heat.
IThe great objection to stoves of this character, heretofore, has been the impossibility of regulating or diminishing the'radiation of the heat at such times and under such circumstances as such decrease or diminution of heat would be desirable; and thel nature of my invention consists in a novel mode of constructing the aforesaid spiral uesurroundingthe central air-drum, whereby a direct draughtcan be produced up through the annular space occupied said spiralue at pleasure, in order to diminishthe quantity of heat radiated, when desired.
To effect this object, I construct the aforesaid iue, or the sprally-arranged plate which forms said flue, in sections, each section being supported or hung upon a pivot or bearing, so as to lbe movable at pleasure, wherebyit may be turned or arranged so as to form part ofthe spiral inclined-plane forming said spiral ue, or so turned up in a vertical position as to aford a direct verticaldraught through the aforesaid annular space. v
To enable those skilled in. the art`to understand how to construct and make use of-my said invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in whichl Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of my invention.
A Figure 2 is an enlarged view, showing one of the vertical series ofY sections of ltlie spiral inclined plane forming the circuitous flue.'
Figure is a horizontal section through the air-drum and outercylinder, showing aplan of the sectional inclined plane; and y Y Figure 4 is an enllarged detail plan view of one of saidvsectio'ns, showing' its pivoted bearings orjournals. Similar letters of reference in the several iigures denote the same parts of my said invention. A represents the fire-chamber; B, the outer cylinder; C, the inner or air-chamber;. E, the air-dues, to conduct or admit air from without to the central drum; and D represents the spiral inclined plane, arranged within the annular spacebetween'the cylinder B and the air-chamber C, as shown, to form the aforesaid spiral ue from the fire-chamber around the-air-chnmber to the chimney or pipe. I
The said inclined plane D 'is madeup of a. series of quadrantalscctions, as indicated in the drawings, each separate section being marked D in igs, 2, 3, ander, and being .provided at each end with projecting lugs or bearings, which enter suitable recesses inthe cylinder B. i y l These sections are arranged sous to present four vertical' series, which-vertical series are alliconnected by a rml or bar, as clearly shown in fig. 2. I
By this arrangement., upon Aturning a rod or knob attached to one of each vertical series of sections, the entire series may be turned, so as to occupy their normal positions as parts of the inclined spiralA forming the circuitous tine, or, when desired, may he turned up vertically, so as to give a direct vertical draught.
'[he sections of said inclined spiral plate may be quadrantailvor semicircular, or beformed of greater or less angle than the right angle, provided there beregular vertical series to be operated, as described.
Orfif desired, the spiral inclined plane may part-ly b e permanently xed in place between the drums B C, having a single series of vertical movable sections, so that al vertical direct draught xight be obtained at one side through the openings Vformed by turning up such movable sections.
When the entire inclined spiral is made in movable sections, so as to operate as aforesaid, vthe tipping up of said sections has the additional eiect of thoroughly cleaning out the said spiral flue, which cannot be effected in tlues ofthe ordinary construction in heaters of this kind.
When only a vertical series of movable sections is made, as above mentioned, even then the process of cleaning out may be partially eil'ected, the soot being removed ,entirely from the movable portions of the flue, and to ysome extent from the stationary parts, by the action of the draught passing up and eddying between the stationary plates forming the stationary portions of the ue.
Having described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I will now specify what I claim, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent. Y
I claim constructing the inclined plane, forming the spiral flue, around a central drum, cylinder, or reservoir, Wholly or in part iu sections, susceptible of being adjustedto form a continuous circuitous spiral flue,
or to open vertically and permit a direct vertical draught, substantially a-s and for the purposes set forth anddescribed.
