Description

It. EATON, OF LEE, COUNTY OF'KENT, ENGLAND.
LocoMoTivEFlRE-GRATE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,329, dated October 30, l8C6.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LAR. EATON, of Lee, England, have invented a new and Improved Locomotive Fire-Grate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
Y reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-.
4Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a grate which is composed of a series of square terraces of gradually-decreasing size, which rise above each other and are inclined toward the center in such a manner that a uniform supply of air to the fuel is obtained and a more perfect combustion is effected than with a grate of the ordinary construction, and, f'urthermore, the Waste of unconsumed fuel dropping through the grate-bars is avoided.
A The invention consists, also, in the arrange- 'mentvof a perforated guard, in combination with suitable dampers in the ash-pan, in such a manner that the supply of air to the fuel can be regulated at pleasure, and at the same time the escape of burning embers from the ash-pan is prevented.
My grate is composed of a series of gratebars, A, which are placed either horizontally or at angles radiating from the perpendicular, and arranged terracewise or in steps, so as to effect an equal distribution of atmospheric air through the mass of the fuel, and principally through the hot embers or charcoal, and to cause'a current of hot ame or gases toward the surrounding water-spaces.
The hearth-plate B is cast with recesses G to receive a filling of fire-brick, fire-clay, or other suitable refractory material, so as to protect the iron and form a durable hearth having a hot surface, tending to promote combustion.
The ash-pan D has two sides and a bottom, and it is attached to ribs cast upon the hearthplate B, and is provided with a back damper, E, front damper, F, and a front guard, Gr, made of wire-gauze or perforated plate. This latter has to be kept tightly closed, except when the fireman has occasion to clean out the ash-pan.
The guard Gr is made of stout wire-gauze with about Iive-sixteenths-inch mesh, or of oneeighth-inch plate thickly perforated with vesixteenths-inch holes, and is attached by bolts to the damper-shaft upon its upper edge, and upon its lower edge and sides to a light iron stiffening-frame, and the guard may beretained shut or open by means of the ordinary lever and rod extending to the foot-board, or by means of a weighted lever.
The main front damper, F, is for the purpose of regulating the draft to the fire, and and the back damper, E, is intended for winter use, bothbeing operated in. the ordinary manner by levers andv rods communicating with the foot-board.V g y 'The grate-bars may be horizontal or placed at any angle inclining upward or downward, or radiating from a perpendicular plane; but I prefer not to deviate more than fifteen degrees either Way from a horizontal plane. Also, in order to promote combustion, where a description of fuel is used, such as peat, &c., which throws off larg'e volumes of gases, re= quiring additional supplies of freshV atmospheric air for their complete ignition and combustion, I use suitable air-pipes K, which draw their supply either direct from the ash-pan, or they may have separate openings outside, controlled by suitable valves or dampers.
As respects the grate-bars, I prefer them being cast in separate parts-that is, each square by itself 5 but they may be cast in pairs or in one piece, and they, moreover, may be round, oval, or polygonal in shape, or plain, in lieu of being square or oblong. Also, as regards the ash-pan, it may either be attached to the hearth-plate or directly to the fire-box and the present or ordinary ash-pans may be easily converted to the purposes of this inveng tion by removing the present front damper to the position shown in the drawings, and subi stitnting the wire-guard in its place.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
l. A grate composed of a series of gratebars, A, either square, round, oblon g, or polyg onal, and placed one above the other in the form of terraces of gradmuy-decreasing size, The above specification of my invention substantially as and for Jshe purpose described. signed by me this 6th day of March, 1866.
2. The ash'puu D provided Withfront guard G, front damper, I, and buck damper, E,i1 RICHARD EATON' combination with the grate, constructed and Witnesses:
operating substantially as und for the purpose J AMES SMITH, s! set forth. s W. HAUFF.
