Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed May 15,1906. Serial No. 317,040.
To tI/Z whom, it Wtcty concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo N. GIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van Wert, in the county of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair-Rod Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a simple form of holder for stair-'rods for securing the same in operative osition on stairs, the intent of the invention being to secure a structure of holder which will permit of quick displacement of the stair-rod or disposition of the same in working position engaging the staircarpet.
Iior a full description of the invention and.
the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accomp anying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder embodying the invention as when in operative ositio'n. Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the pivoted finger-piece turned longitudinally of the attaching-plate, the rodholding member being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. l is a detail perspective view of the rod-engaging member.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the ractical embodiment of the'invention it wi l be understood that a holder comprising the same may be made of any ornamental appearance desired, according to the whim of the manufacturer and consideration of cost.
The device is preferably secured to the riser of the stair in the customary way, and consists of an attaching-plate l, a rod-engaging member or plate 2, and a finger-piece 3, in the form of a pivoted member, applied to the-attaching-plate and arranged to engage the rod-engaging plate 2 to hold the latter in position. The plate 1 may be of somewhat T shape and is secured, preferably, by screws 1a to the riser of the stair or by any other suitable fastenings. The finger-piece 3 is arranged at a point between the ends of the plate 1 and is pivoted at 4, opposite ends of the finger-piece 3 being adapted to engage over side portions of the member 2 to positively position the latter. The member 2 comprises a body having a longitudinal slot 5 to receive the longitudinal portion of the plate l, so that the parts 1 and 2 will be flush with one another with reference to the outer surfaces thereof, whereby the finger-piece 3 may be readily turned so as to occupy a position transverse of the plate l to engage the member 2, as above described, and accomplish the desired function. The body of the member 2 is formed at one end with a grooved extension or flange 6, which will engage over the stair-rod (not shown) when the latten is 1n use.
One of the devices hereinbefore set forth will be located at opposite ends of the riser of a stair to engage the stair-rod, and the members 2 may be readily removed when it is desired to replace the stair-rod preparatory to taking up stair-carpet for any purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In combination with a riser of stairs, a stair-rod holder consisting of a rod-engaging member, and a member applied to the riser `to engage the rod-engaging member and detachably hold the same in position.
2. In a stair-rod holder, the combination of an attaching-plate, a stair-rod-engaging member provided with a slot to receive the attaching-plate, and a member applied to the attaching member and arranged to engage the rod-engaging member to detachably position the latter.
3. In a stair-rod holder, the combination of an attaching-plate, a rod-engaging member provided with an extension or flange to engage a rod and having a slot to receive the attaching-plate, and a member pivoted between its ends to the attaching-plate and adapted to engage opposite side portions of the rod-engaging member to support the latter in operative position.
4. In a stair-rod, the combination of an attaching-plate, a stair-rod-engaging member provided with a slot, and a finger-piece ivoted between its ends to the attaching-p ate IOO and adapted when arranged transversely of l In testimony whereof I aliX my signature the attaching-plate to engage opposite side l in presence of two Witnesses.
