MOLDING ANDI-IOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming* part of Letters Patent N o. 683,248, dated September 24, 1901.
Application tiled July 6,1899. Serial No. 722,926. (No model.)
To 1f/ZZ whom it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON Oris CHASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moldings and Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
`My invention is a simple and convenient means of support-ing hooks, brackets, dac., on walls and other convenient locations; and it consists partly in a novel construction of a strip or molding for holding the hook or other device and partly in anovelconstruction of the supported device to adapt it to such strip or molding.
The object of my invention is to support closet hooks, picture hooks, wall brackets, and other devices in such a way that no special fastening means are required and so that the devices thus supported shall be easily movable and adjustable to different positions. Taking closet-hooks as an illustration, it is the common practice to screw such hooks at intervals to a strip or molding fastened to the wall. The intervals are such as the builders idea of convenience dictates; but the subsequent user often finds it desirable to change them and is unable to do so. Picture-hooks, as commonly supported on moldings, are capable of being changed and moved; but this is accomplished with great difficulty, and it is usually necessary to take down the picture,ad j ust the hook, and rehang the picture.
My invention is embodied, first, in a hollow molding or strip having an open longitudinal slot, and, second, ina supported device, such as a hook, adapted to fit within such molding and project through the slot and be easily and readily movable longitudinally.
My invention is confined to the details of construction of the hook combined with the molding.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hook, showing the molding in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the molding and hook. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one form of molding, and Fig. 4 a similar View of a modified form.
Referring to Figs. l and 2, A represents a strip, which in this case is composed of two lengths of molding similarly constructed and cooperating to produce a single recessed seat. The rear face of each piece of molding is rabbeted, as shown at a, the rabbet on one opposing that on the other. The two pieces of molding are secured to a wall or other support by screws or otherwise, in such proximity that an open slot c extends longitudinally between their front faces which communicates with the inner longitudinal chamber formed by the opposing rabbets, giving the effect of a hollow strip having an open slot communicating with the interior. The same effect is produced by constructing the strips as shown in the sections in Figs. 3 and 4f. In Fig. 3, however, the moldings A are secured to a support, which is a back piece or pieces B, so as to be a complete article of manufacture adapted to be made and sold in suitable lengths and attached to a wall or elsewhere. The back piece B may be continuous along the Whole' length; but it is evident that separate pieces can be secured at intervals and form a complete structure. The part or parts B can be secured by small nails or screws or can be glued to the molding-strips. In Fig. 4 I have shown a slotted and chambered molding or strip A2, formed in -one piece. All these strips can be composed of any suitable material, such as wood or metal, and may be plain or ornamental to any extent. In connection with these hollow strips or moldings any desired kind of hook, bracket, or other supporting device can be used when provided with proper means of attachment. The hook shown herein is formed in two parts and so constructed that it may be securely clamped or locked in the desired position, this being a particularly desirable feature when it is to be secured in vertically-arranged molding. Within the enlarged or wider portion of the slot in the molding the head g of the hook is located, from the central portion of which the shank portion d extendsthrough the narrow portion of the slot. This shank portion has a hole tapped therein into which a threaded extension of the hook proper is screwed. By turning the hook the head g and disk c, carried by the hook proper, are drawn toward each other to securely clamp the hook'to the l screwed-into the end of said shank, substanmolding. Y l tiaily as described.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1n testimony whereof I have aixed my what I claim as new, and desire to secure by signature, in presence of two Witnesses, this 5 Letters Patent, is- 26th day of June, 1899.
The combination With a picture-rod having a. T-'shaped slot therein, of a head tted to HARRISON OTIS CHASE the Wider portion of the slot and a shank Witnesses: tted to the narrower portion thereof, of the y L. W. SEELY, Io hook proper having a threaded extension W. B. HENRY.
