LOUIS W. AUSTIN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF, COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL ELECTRIC SIGNALING COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYL- VANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
RECEIVER.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed October 27, 1906. Serial No, 340,845.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, LOUIS W. AUsTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Washington, inv the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receivers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention herein described relates to certain improvements in receivers for electric receiving, and more especially for signaling by electromagnetic Waves.
The invention is hereinafter more fully descrlibedl and claimed. I f
n t e accompanyin drawin orming a part of this specificatio ii, the fig ure is a diagrammatic view illustrating my improvement.
In a previous application I have described and claimed a receiver for electromagnetic waves consisting of a thermo-electric couple having one of its members or elements formed of tellurium, the other being formed, of aluminium or other suitable metal or alloy.
I have found that a thermo-electric element consisting of tellurium and'silicon or alloys of these metals is especially sensitive and: ossesses many advantages as a receiver for e ctromagnetic Waves.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, 7 is an aerial grounded, as shown.
3 is a wedge-shaped piece of tellurium mounted on a wire 4, and 1 is a rod of silicon mounted on a hard-rubber sheet 2.
6 is an adjusting-springcontrolled by the screw 5.
8 is a telephone-receiver. On the passage of the electrical oscillations through the thernio-couple formed of the elements 1 and 3 the telephone produces an indication or signal;
What I claim is- 1. In a system of signaling, a receiver consisting of a thermo-couple having as its elements tellurium and silicon.
2. In a system of signaling by electromagnetic waves, a receiver consisting of a thermocouple having as its elements tellurium and silicon.
Signed at Brant Rock, Marshfield township, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts,'this 24th day of October, A. D. 1 906.
LOUIS W. AUSTIN.
