To-all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS D. Ermnr, a citizen of the United States, residiin at Ardmore, county of Montgomery, and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wireless Sig naling Systems, of which the following is a very specification.
. My invention relates to receiving apparatus to be employed in systems wherein messages or signals are transmitted through the natural media through the agency of electro-rudiant energy. My invention resides in awave responsive device or detector which consists of a condenser device in which the dielectric mass or medium is such as to manifest dielectric hysteresis. I
My invention resides also in such wave responsive device in combination with other apparatus and circuit arrangements at the receiving station of a wireless signaling system.

As is well understood ln the electrical arts, there is a hysteresis loss-or effect in the material forming the dielectric of a condenser. The dielectric substance is subjected to increasing and decreasing electric strains and in consequence thereof there is certain energy loss in carrying the dielectric sub stance through the cycles or variations of electric straln. Some substances, though good insulators, are unsuitable as the dielectric media for condensers as ordinarily employed in the electrical arts because their dielectric hysteresis eifects are so great as to cause their undue heating and therefore unsuitability for service in the condenser.
The hereinafter described apparatus is believed. to involve the principle of dielec= trio hysteresis, the high tions being believed to change or vary the hysteresis effect thus causing a change in the capacity of the condenser, and so causing manifestation in the telephone or other signal translating instrument. While giving this as a tentative theor merely, the invention, nevertheless, may e understood by the following description. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which the drawing is a diagrammatic view of a receiving apparatus employing a condenser like device whose dielectric medium is of rubber or the like.

In this arrangement the source (5 is capable of supplying an alternating or varying clcctromotive force of approxlmately 400 or 500 volts and of a periodicity or frequency such that a telephone receiver will not respond thereto. The frequency of the source 6, and its voltage, or both of them, is so adjusted that an effect in the telephone receiver is just im- Upon the reception of electrorudiant energy the eifect of such energy upon the dielectric hysteresis of the sub stance 2 is such to change the dielectric hysteresis effect and thereby change in effect the capacity of the condenser device, causing a change in amount of or permitting a greater flow of energy through the local circuit including the telephone receiver 7 and thereby causing a response in said telephone receiver. Such response of the telephone receiver corresponds with the reception of the electro-radiant energy, persists-so long as the electro-radiant energy continues to arrive, and ceases when the olcctro-radiant energy ceases.
In general, for the dielectric of the condenser device I prefer to use such substance or substances as have relatively great dielectric hysteresis effects; though the system is operative when a substance having lower dielectric hysteresis effect is emplo ed.
Though I have shown the com enser device connected directly in the aerial conductor it is obvious that the condenser de- 'VICB may be connected in a receiving circuit which is in inductive relation with the aerial conductor; the condenser device may obviously be connected in any relation that will bring'itunder the influence either directly ener y.

In wireless signaling system, an aerial conductor, a condenser wave responsive device associated therewith, a local circuit including said wave responsive device, a source 5 of fluctuating current, and a telephone rclin a receiver system for electro-radiant energy, combination with a capacity e2:- hiliiting device, of means for subjecting the same to the received energy, and a circuit including said device, a source of current and a signal translating instrument.

10. In a wireless signaling system, the combination with an aerial conductor, of a wave-responsive device associated therewith, and a local circuit including said wave-responsive device a telephone and a source of fluctuating current.
11. In a wireless signaling system, the combination with a receiving conductor, of a condenser associated therewith as a Wavea local source of fluctuating energy continuously acting upon said condenser.
12. In a Wireless signaling system t-he combination with. a receiving conductor, of a wave-responsive device associated therewith, and capable of manifesting a capacity reaction, and a local source of fluctuating voltage cooperating with said wave-responsive device.
