Be it known that I, WEBB M. OUNGST, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lead, Slug, Rule, and Furniture Cases, of which the following is a de scription.

My invention relates to that class of devices known as cases employed in printing establishments for storing and handling leads, slugs, rules, and similar material employed in the art of printing.

The object of, my invention is to provide a simple and convenient case of the kind described wherein the various boxes or holders are removable.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein like or similar reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a composing-stand provided with cases embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a single box or holder. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a part of a case, showing the preferred manner of engaging the boxes with the frame. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a slightly-modified form of a single holder.

In the preferred form of my device shown in the drawings, 1 is a composing-stand of the usual or any preferred form adapted to support in an inclined position the cases 2 and 3. These cases may be of any desired form, size, or arrangement and comprise a frame or tray preferably having an even plain bottom 5, provided with a series of horizontal grooves 4, produced, if desired, by forming the bottom of a plurality of longitudinally-extending slats or strips 5 5 with their adjacent edges slightly separated or 1in any other manner, so that a series of longitudinally-extending shoulders 4 are provided with which the boxes or holders may be en gaged to hold them in suitable position transversely of the case. If desired, each case may be provided with an upwardly-extending marginal projection 6 at its ends for pre venting longitudinal displacement of the holders, or, if preferred, formed to entirely inclose the whole case, as shown.

The holders are preferably formed of suitable, sheet metal and may be of any desired shape, that shown in the drawings being preferred. As shown in the drawings, each holder comprises a bottom 7, sides 8 8, and an end 9, thus forming a box inclosed on three sides, but entirely open upon the fourth side, although .it may be desirable under some conditions to close this side also. holder is preferably provided with means for engaging the same with the bottom of its case with the longitudinal partitions of an ordinary type-case or equivalent means. As shown in Fig. 2, a part 10 is formed to project downward at one edge of the bottom 7 of the holder, thus forming a hook member to engage with any convenient part, as shown in Fig. 4. In Fig. 5 the engaging means 11 is positioned at a distance from the edges and so arranged that if the holder is elevated at the end 9 the parts 11 will be disengaged from the shoulder 4 while the opposite end of the holder rests upon the bottom of the tray, thus greatly increasing the ease with which the holders may be disengaged from the case. To still further aid in the convenient manipulation of these holders, a handle or finger-piece 12 may be provided upon the end 9, as shown.

In operation the cases are made as shown, and the holders are provided, preferably, of a sire to suit the various materials they are to contain and are arranged in the cases as shown in Fig. 1. If an operator requires material found in any of the holders, such holder may, if desired, be detached from its position in the tray and carried to the case where required and there engaged in a convenient position with a partition in the case or other convenient part and when no longer required is returned to its own tray.

Obviously the holder and its contents may be very conveniently scrubbed or cleaned when formed as above described. For this purpose when desired a holder and its contents may be carried to any for the purpose, thus saving time and confining the disagreeable features attending such operations to a restricted locality.

In the following claims where the Word type is employed I wish it to be understood in a broad sense as referring to types, leads, slugs, or any other material adapted to be used in a type-form.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A type-case comprising a tray provided with a smooth even bottom provided with grooves whereby longitudinally extending shoulders are formed in said bottom, in combination with a plurality of type-boxes, each provided with means for detachably engag ing one of said shoulders whereby the transposition of said type-boxes are determined in said tray.

2. In a device of the kind described, a sheet-metal type-box having a flat bottom inclosed on three sides, a doWnwardly-pro jecting part upon said bottom near said open side and a curved projection at the top of the side opposite said opening.

3. In a deviie of the kind described, a sheet-metal type-box having a fiat bottom in rlosed on three sides, said bottom being extended at said open side and bent downward, and the side opposite said opening being extended and bent outward.
