Thus the drum E becomes the steam-drum, from which the steam may be withdrawn through a suitable outlet, such as e. The drums E and D are connected b v two sets of pipes or tubes F and 1"', the former :being preferably located above thcwater-level to serve as steam-passages and as steam-su ierheaters, while the latter are located below the water-level and serve as a `part of the water-circulating system of the generator.

The banks of tubes I and K are inclined downwardly from the front of the Generator at such an angle as to secure the best circulation and action of the heated pruducts of combustion thereon. Vhile the drums D, G, and Il may be cylindrical drums, as shown in Fig, 4, and the ends of the tubes connecting therewith hentto enter said drums radially, in the preferred construction thc said drnnis are provided with flat faces in which the tube-o enings are formed, such faces being indicate( in Fig. 1 bv the letters d, g, and li., respectively. With this construction it is highly desirable that the flat faces shall be braced and strengthened to approximate in strength the c linilrical portions of the drums without t e necessity of employing heavier metal in the flattened portions. To accomplish this successfully and ut the same time permit of the employment of the maximum number of tubes in staggered relation to eac-h other, so that the rodncts of combustion will be forced to ollow a tortuous path in passing throu h between the tubes, we now make use ofgsinuous stays which are riveted to the inner faces of thel flattened portions of' the drums.
The snuous formation of the stays permits them to pass between the ends of the tubes or openings for the ends of the tubes without coming into sncli proximity thereto as to interfere either with the heading of the tubes or the cleaning of the same after the generator is in use.- In the preferred construction these sinuous stays, aswell illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3,are formed of flanged metal. From the foregoing it will be seen that the staggered arrangement of tubes is used in connection with a staggered or sectional arrangement of the flanges on the stays, whereb v each will perform its functions without interfering with the other and at the same time the maximum strength in the drum 'may be secured.
