HERBERT OOTTRELL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE IRVINGTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF IRVINGTON, NEW
JERSEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed December 16, 1903. Serial No. 185.406.
To all whom/ it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, HEnnERT CoTTnnLL, of the city of Newark, county of Essex, State have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Staple-l7ullers and FenceJ iakers Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my inventionds to produce as an article of manufacture a simple, durable, and effective implement to operate as a staple-puller and fence-makers tool.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of my invention. Fig. 2- is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of my invention.
My invention comprises two handle members, as at a l), which maybe pivoted together at one end to form gripping-jaws. Both members may be formed in one die, as b. The pivoted end of each member is extended at right angles to form a hammer-head. The members at and. b have side extensions of the gripping-jaws, forming wedge-like projections, as at c, Fig. 3. The extension forming the hammer-head is arched both laterally and longitudinally at its front to give the in corners and. depressed recesses. The jaws of this implement are provided with a flat abutting surface arranged oppositely to the wedge 6, such flat surface being adapted to press the staple to be ulled upon the wedge, the incline of whic 1 forces thestaple out of the wood. This feature distinguishes the mechanical action thereof from one of leverage or pull to extract the staple.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, a and b arethe handle members, 0 is the Wedgep0int, and d is the recess in the fiat portion e of opposing jaw.
shape pivoted In operation'the implement is used as follows: The members a and b are opened and the wedge c is inserted in the bend of the staple above the fence-wire. The fiat portion e of opposing jaw is caused to press upon the staple opposite to the wedge, then the further act of closing the implement grips the staple between the wedge-point and the fiat portion e of opposirg jaw, and additional pressure forces the wedge-point through the staple and draws it from the wood by the act of closing the implement.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is
1. In an implement of the class described, comprising handle members of identical together to form grippingjaws ;v said jaws provided with a tapered wedge projection and a recessed flat abutment arranged in the arc of their faces, and adapted to register one with the other; sub stantially as described, and as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In an implement of the class described, handle members of identical shape, pivoted together to form grippingjaws; each jaw having its face arched both laterally and longitudinally, and each provided with a wedge projection extended from one side of its face, and a flat recessed abutment upon the other side of its face; both arranged so that the wedge-points thereof register with and are adapted to be received within the recesses of the flat abutments, in the act of closing the jaws; substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
Signed this 15th day of December, 1903. HERBERT COTTRELL. In presence of ELIZABETH DENMAN, Fnnnx. C. Fiscrrnn.
