ISAAC NEWTON HALEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NAIL-PULLER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
` Patented Get. '7, 1913.
Application filed September 30, 1912. Serial No. 723,145.
To all'wlzom t may concern Be it known that I, IsAAo N. I-IALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Pullers, of which the `following is al specification. Y
My invention relates to improvements in nail pullers, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which insures a firm gripping of the nail to compel the extraction of the latter when the device is operated.
A further object is to provide a nail puller which embodies two nail gripping members with a longitudinally movable handle mounted `to move between the members and having a wedge portion to compel the members to tightly grip the nail when the handle is forced downwardly A further object isto provide a nail puller of this character which is comparatively simple in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, and strong and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction Vand combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved nail puller in operative position, the upper end of the handle being broken away. Fig. 2 is a view in cross section on t-heline 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in `longitudinal section throughV the base member illustrating the nail gripping members and the handle in elevation with the parts in the same position as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the nail grippingV members. Fig. 5 is a broken perspective view of the handle. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the other gripping member. Fig. 7 is a broken perspective view of the base member, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the side plate 14.
My impro-ved device comprises a base member 1 which is in the form of a casting having parallel sides 2, 2, formed with longitudinal slots 3 therein and integral with a curved claw 4 at one end and a milled hammer head 5 at its other end. The hammer head 5 has cast therein a bar 6 of eX- tremly hard metal which extends at both ends beyond the base and is adapted to be used for depressing the wood at the sides of the nail head lO to form an entrance for gripping jaws 7, 7, at the ends of my improved gripping members 8 and 9 respectively. The gripping members 8 and 9 are pivotally supported adjacent their lower ends Y by rivets l1 which are extended through registering openings 12 and 13 in the base l and members 8 and 9 respectively, and also through openings in a covering plate 14 which is located at one side of the base 1 and extends above the base opposite an integral extension plate 14EL on the base l, as' seen mostl clearly in Figs. l, 3, and 7.
The upper end of base l on the shorter side thereof, is recessed as shown at 3a to form an entrance for the slot 3 which facilitates the assembling of the parts as will more fully hereinafter appear. The base 1, adjacent its upper end, is provided with openings 15 to receive rivets 16. These rivets 16 are also projected through the plate 14, and they extend through slots 17 in members 8 and 9 respectively, so that they limit the pivotal movement of the members.
Between the members 8 and 9, my improved handle 18 is positioned, and comprises a bar having a longitudinal slot 19 therein through which a rivet 2O connect-ing the upper ends of plate 14 and extension 14a project. The lower end of the handle 18 is provided with a transversely projecting block 2l which is movable in the slots 3, and may be readily positioned in the slot at the recess 3a, and this lower portion of the handle is enlarged transversely forming a wedge 22, the edges of which engage the inner edges of members 8 and 9 above the pivot-al po-ints of the latter, so that when the handle is forced downwardly, this wedge 22 serves to force the upper portion of the members 18 and 9 apart and press their lower ends together, so that the jaws 7, 7, securely Grip the nail. The upper end of plate 14 1s thicker than the lower portion forming a shoulder 14b which ts over the upper edge of the casting at one side and closes the upper recessed end 3a of slot 3.
The members 8 and 9 are bowed between their ends and member 8 is bifurcated as shown at 23 to straddle the handle 18 and allow the members to be gripped at opposite sides of the handle to readily manipulate the members to separate the jaws 7 when one hand is gripped around the upper ends of the members S and 9 and the handle 18. In other words, in operating the device, one end is gripped around the upper ends of the members 8 and 9 to draw them toward the handle, thus spreading the jaws 7, 7, apart,
it being of course, understood that the han-Y Y in this position, the handle 18 is drawn to one side with the claw 4 as a ulcrum, so that the nail is drawn out of the wood. 1f the nail be long, and the move-ment above described does not draw it entirely out of the wood, the head may be gripped by the claw and the hammer end 5 operated as a ulcrum to draw the nail entirely out of the wood.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to malte such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A nail puller comprising a base member having parallel slotted sides, and side plates at opposite sides of the base member, nail gripping members pivotally connected to the base member andy having slots therein above other pivotal connection, devices projected through the base member and the side plates and through the slots in the nail gripping members, a handle member positioned between the nail gripping members and having a wedge shaped enlargement adapted to engage the nail gripping members, a transverse bar on the handle movable in the slots in the casting, said handle Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. L Y
having a longitudinal slot therein, and a rivet rojected through the upper ends of the sic e plates and through said slot in the handle, substantially as described.
2. A nail puller comprising a base having an extension thereon constituting a fulcrum', nail gripping members pivotally supported by the base, and a wedge shaped hanc le connected to the base and movable longitudinally between the nail gripping members, whereby the movement of the handle in one direction forces lthe ends of the nail ygripping members toward each other, substantially as described.,
3. A nail puller comprising a base having an extension thereon constituting a fulcrum nail gripping members pivotally supported by the base, and a wed e shaped handle connected to the base an movable -longitudif nally between the nail gripping members, whereby the movement of the handle in one direction forces the ends of the nail gripping members toward each other, and said nail gripping members extended above the base and adapted to be moved to-ward the handle to move them apart at their nail engaging ends, substantiallyas described.
1. A nail puller comprising a base having an extension thereon constituting a ulcrum,
nail gripping members pivot-ally supported by the base, and a wedge shaped handle connected to the base anl movable longitudinally between the nail gripping members, whereby the movement of the handle in one direct-ion forces the Vends of the nail gripping members toward each other, and said soV nail gripping members extended above the base and adapted to be moved toward the handle to move them apart at theirnail en-V gagingends, one of said nail gripping mem.`
bers bifurcated at its upper end and adapted to receive the handle in said bifurcated end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses. w Y v rsAAc NEWTON HALEY.
