Description

WILLIAMI U. HEIMRDINGER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SAFETY-RAZOR..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Maren '5, 1 907.
ADDCMOH-ld January 18,1905. Serial .Ne. 241,662.v
To (all whom, t Tita/y concern: j
Be it known that I, V/'ILLIAM C. Human DINGER, a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Safety-R aZors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it apper- I plate, andthe wingsthereof will fulcrum on tains to make and use the same.v i
My inventlon relates to improvements 1n safety-razors, the object of the invention loeing to provide an improved fieXible guard and means for adjusting the same to vary its position with relation to the blade or blades,
and, further, to so construct-the blade as to #facilitate such adjustment of the guard.
VWith thesefand otherobjeets in view the invention consists'V in certain novel features of after appear.
.construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully herein after described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is' a view in longitudinal section, illustrating' my Fig. 2 isa view in side eleva- Fig. 4 is a plan view of the guard. Y
1 represents a sleeve having a' double 'guard 12 integral therewith and the wings of said guard grooved or otherwise thinned, as
.shown at"3, to give" elasticity and flexibility to the wings for a purpose which herein- 4 represents the backing-plate, which is of sufficient thickness to insure its rigidity and is secured lat its center to an angular rodv 5, which projects through the angular bore of sleeve 1. A holding-sleeve 6 has angularopenings to receive the rod 5, and-the latter is screw-threaded at its end tojreceive 'a thumb-nut', 7 .Sleeves 1 and have cylindricall Shanks 8 and 9, respectively, to receive an adjusting-sleeve 1Q, and the shank 9 hasI screw-threads meshing with `threads in sleeve 10, so that when the latter is turned the guard 2 and backing-plate l will be separated ory moved toward eachpther, as the case may be.
11 represents my-improved blade, two of which'are employed with the razor. The
blade is madeA with a fiat side and tapers from the center of its'other side down to its edges.
' In other words, the blade in cross-section is triangular,` and such .triangularfshape in cross-section providesv a fiat side to rest against the flat face of backing-plate'4 .and
the highest orthickest portion of the blades to swing the'guard-ngers 'away from the blade edge,- as shown in Fig. 2, ready for ay close shave. At either adjustment Vthe fiat portions of the guard rest against fiat faces ofthe blades, and the blades are securely clamped at either adjustment. X
To prevent lateral movement of the blades J the backing-plate 4 is provided with lugs 12, which latter also serve toflimit'inward movement of lugs 11a at the ends of the blades, `.and to prevent accidental displacement of the blades while assembling the parts either the backing-plate or guard is magnetized, so Vas to attract and hold the light blade and prevent its slipping out of place beforeit can be securely clamped.
lmade-in the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without departing from my invention,- and hence Lwouldhave it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I. claim asnew, and desire to secure by Let 'ters Patent, is-
- 1.4 A blade for a safety-razor having a fiat bearingface on one side and the other `side having inclined faces terminating at the edges of the blade, vin combination with a yielding guard to receive'the side of thev A great many slight changes might be IOO tion with a yielding guard to receive the'- Y yside of the blade having the inclined faces and an adjustable backing-plate tol 'bear against the fiat face of the blade.
y Q 3. In ansafety-razor, the coinbinaton of a `rigid backing-plate,' aexible guard and a.
" on the other side.
blade held between and said rigid backing-vplate and flexible guardf" said blade having two beveled faces onone side and-,aflat face 4. lIn a safety-razor, thecombination of' a rigid backing-plate, a blade having a flat face against the' baoking-plate, a flexible guard,
and said blade having a ulcrumon which the guard is movable 5. Ina safety-razor, the combination of a clamp for razor-blades, comprising arigid backing-plate and a exible and elasticl guard and a razor-blade located between said backing-plate and guard and having a ful# 6. In a safety-razor, the combination of a` I I y double guard lhaving thin portions to' give flexibility andfelastioity thereto, a rigid double backing-plate,. and blades securely rod secured to the backing and l(damned between Athe guardfand backingplate, said `blades havingulcrum" on ysaid guard. v v ,I
7. The combination with a sleeve and a guard thereon, of a backing-plate, an angular roj ec ting through the guard-sleeve, a hol ing-sleeve having angularopenings toreceive the rod, a nut screwed onto the rod against said sleeve,
.and an adjusting-sleevehaving screw-threaded engagement with the holding-sleeve,- and4 bearing at its other end against the guardsleeve. 4 In testimony .whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib-
