. door when swun closed by the action of its in s,in.which-- igure -1 is a plan view showing the, door spring or s ring- 'nges tends to fly back and remain s ciently awayfrom the door jamb or molding to leave a crack for the entrance of flies.
An object, therefore, of the present invention is to provide a device which will avoid this objection and which will not only serve to prevent the door from slamming violently with a loud noise, but which will serve to prevent any rebound and will holdit tightly shut until it is desired to again open it.
With these andother objects in view the invention in'cludesthe construction and arrangement ofparts-hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
It is illustrated in the accompanying drawin section. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position assumed in the swinging retaining device or holder w en the door is open. Fi s. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.
heferr' by reference characters to the closed, the door and door-post being shown drawings, t e numeral 4 designates the screen turned portion 6 or other door, and 5 the door-casin at the swinging edge of the door. To t 's door casing or-post 5 I secure a metallic casing 6, which may conveniently be formed of a sin- 1 gle piece of sheet metal folded upon itself to which are turned outwardly at right angles,
shown at 6 and provided wit {the reception of screws for securing the easormparallel side walls 6, the lower ends of holes for ingl in place.
he central portion 6, which connects the two side Webs, is provided with an inwardlywhich serves for the connection of the spring, hereinafter described.
The catching and retaining device proper comprises, preferably, two parallel crescentshaped arms 7, which are connected together by suitable transverse pins or the like, as indicated at 8, and are pivotally connected to the side Walls 6* by means such as rivets 9 and 9 A spring 10 is provided Within the casing and between the arms, one end of which is connected to the lug or projection 6 hereinbefore referred to, and the other end is connected to-the pin 8. It will be seen that the relation of this pin 8 to the ull of the spring and the rivets is such that w en the door is opened the crescent-shaped arms will be swung back "until the pin 8 crosses the dead-center, when the spring will tend to hold the crescentsha ed arms pulled back against the Wall 6 of t. e casing, in which position the ends 7*" of the crescent-shaped arms will project at substantially right angles across the path of the free edge of the door. Supposing now the door to be swung shut in I this spring, its edge will contact with this portion or portions 7 with sufiicient force to cause them to rock until the pin 8, to which the sprin is connected, has crossed the deadcenter, w en the spring will continue the motionof the arms, causing them to pass the end or ends 7 to swing in in rear of the ed e of the door. ably provided with a roller of any suitable yie ding material, which may be suitably ournaled upon the pin 9 I find it desirable to provide a piece of sheet metal or similar material, which will be clam ed around the edge of the door, and there y fastened on both sides, against which the opposite ends of'the crescent will not as the door is opened and closed, as shown at 11.
From the foregoing description it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be obvious and its merit manifest.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim is 1 1. In combination, a bracket of sheet metal having parallel sidesand angularlyturned portions forming securing-flanges, an
the'sides of the bracket, a pin connecting said y para iel arms and a sprirr extending between said pin and the tug of bracket, substantially as described.
The ends '7 are prefer- 2 In combination, a sheet-metal bracket the outward movement of said arm, substanhev'ing parallel sides,'a cross-wall connecting tially as described; I :0 said sides, a erescent-shapedarm having its In testimony whereof I afiix my signature intermediate portion pivoted between said in presence of two witnesses.
5 sides, a spring extending between the bracket JOHN R. GALLINGER.
and said arm and tending to swing it toward Witnesses: the limit of its movement in either direction, HARRY E. GALL'INGER,
the said e 'oss-wall serving as a stop to f LOUIS KUNDSEN.
