Letters Patent No. 84,508, dated December 1, 1868.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jxuns PILKERING, of the town of New Hope, in the county of Bucks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and" improved Bench-Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention consists, briefly, in the application'and arrangement of two inclined planes or slides, the upper one of which is attached to the movable jaw of the vise, and passes through the fixed v or immovable jaw, and also through a connecting-bar or slide, to which the lower inclined plane is attached.

Its operation is as follows:

\Vhen the vise is opened or closed by means of the screw, in the usual way, the movable jaw carries withit the upper inclined plane or slide attached thereto. Said upper inclined plane or slide, moving horizontally therewith, imparts of the connecting-bar or slide, to which the lower inclined plane is solidly attached, thereby pressing the lower inclined plane against the foot of the movable jaw, keeping the same in a position parallel to that of the fixed or immovable jaw, at all points distant therefrom, forming a simple and effective pam-Ilel vise,the construction and arrangement of which are clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.

A is the fixed or immovable jaw of the vise.

It is the upper inclined plane or slide, secured firmly to the movable jaw, and resting upon the bot-tom of a slot in the immovable jaw.v

'l is the connecting-bar or vertical slide, through which inclinedplane It passes.

S is the lower inclined plane, solidly attached, and forming a. part of connecting-bar or slide T.

1) is the screw, by which the vise is operated in the usual manner.

Vhat I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The two inclined planes or slides, when combined and arranged in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein described'and set forth.
