HAND SCREW CLAMP.
. UNITED TATES ATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT A. VVATERHOUSE, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAND SC REW-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,303, dated September 3, 1889. Application filed May 1, 1889. Serial No. 309,243. (No model.)
' HOUSE, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk,
State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hand Screw-Clamps, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved clamp in use; Fig. 2, an enlarged top plan view of the clamp with the screws removed; Fig. 3, a horizontal longitudinal section of the adjustable jaw, and Fig. 4: a sectional view showing details of construction.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to hand screw-clamps which are provided with an adjustable jaw and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improve ment will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the fixed jaw; B, the movable jaw C, the fulcrum-screw, and D the clamping-screw. The fixed jaw and screws are of the ordinary form and construction and arranged in the usual manner. The jaw B is divided longitudinally into two sections 1) d, hinged together at f to open or separate horizontally. The section b is provided on its inner face with a longitudinal tongue g, adapted to enter a corresponding groove in the section at to prevent vertical movement of said sections. The jaw Bis provided with openings h z for the screws, surrounded by a metallic collar or guide-ring 7c, provided with slotted arms Z, in which screws m in the upper face of the jaw-sections work and prevent said sections from becoming separated or opened too far. A laterally-arranged chamber 19, Fig. 3, is formed in the jaw-sections near the screw-opening 2', and a coiled spring q is disposed therein, said spring acting expansively to 'throw said sections open. A
horizontally-arranged rod 0-, Fig. 3, is secured by .a nut 25 in the section b and pro ects laterally through an opening U in the section (I. A
H, instead of turning the screws C D until the movable jaw engages said object, the lever 00 is thrown back into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. This frees the section cl and permits the spring (1 to act to throw said sections apart, thus disengaging the threaded opening t' from the sorewD and permittin g the j aw B to slide readily on the screws until stopped by the article to be clamped. The lever .90 is then moved inward, forcing the j aw-sections together, so that its threaded opening '0' will take on the screw D, which may then be operated in the usual manner to complete the clamping process. The collars 7c serve to guide the jaw on the screws wh en its sections are separated, and its slotted arms Z, working on the pins m, guide said sections as they are forced together again by the lever w, as described.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is 1. In a clamp of the character described, a fixed jaw, f .ulcrum-screw, and clamping-screw, in combination with a movable jaw provided with screw-opcnings and divided longitudinally into two sections hinged together at one end, a cla1nping-lever for fastening said sections together, and a spring for separating them when released, substantially as described.
2. In a clamp of the character described, a fixed jaw, fulcrum-screw, and clamping-screw, in combination with a movable jaw having screw-openings and divided longitudinally into two sections hinged together at one end, a rod secured in one section and projecting through an opening in the opposite section, a cam-lever pivoted to the free end of said rod, and a spring for separating said sections, substantially as described.
3. In a clamp of the character described,
the combination of a fixed jaw, fulcrum and clamping screws, a movable jaw having screwopenings and divided longitudinally into sections tongued and grooved on their inner faces and hinged together at one end, a coiled spring disposed in a chamber in said jaw and acting expansively to force its sections apart, a rod secured in one section and projecting through an opening in the opposite section, a cam-lever pivoted to said'rod, and guide-collars for said screws provided with slotted arms working on pins in the movable jawsections, substantially as described. j
4. In a hand screw-clamp, the jaw A and screws 01), in combination with the jaw B, comprising the hinged sections 1) d, the collars is, having the slotted arms Z, working on pins m, and mechanism, substantially as described, for locking said sections together.
5. In a hand screw-clamp, the jaw A and screws O D, in combination with the jaw B, comprising the hinged sections 1) d, tongued and grooved at'g and provided with screwopenings h "i, chamber 1), and opening 1:, the spring q in said chamber, the rod 0", projecting through the opening 1;, the cam-lever :v, pivoted to said rod, and the collars is, having the slotted arms Z working on pins m, substantially as described.
