Description

PATENTBD NOV. 24, 1868.
A. G. SMITH. CONSTRUCTION OF WASTE WATER PIPES.
Wig/26,6225;
" UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
ADAM o. sMrrH, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TH EZCONSTRUCTION OF WASTE-{WATER PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent-N0. 84.442, dated November 24, 1868.
My'invention consists ofa water-pipe made by coiling a. strip of metal' spirally and so that one edge shall overlap the-other, as'described hereinafter, a pipe thus made being more economical than ordinary soldered pipes, and at thesame time such that it will accommodate itself to the ice which frequently forms in wator-pipes during the winter months.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and practice my invention, I will now proceed to' describe a mode of carrying the same into etfect, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which--- Figure'l is an exterior view, and Fig. 2 a sectional'view, of my improved waste-water pipe.
I take a long strip of tinned or galvanizediron plate or of zinc and coil it spirally round a cylindrical former, taking carethat one edge overlaps the other; as seen in Fig. 2. After the former has been withdrawn, one rivet, m, 'at each; end 'of the pipe will sufiice to maintain 'thecoil in the form of ,a tube; or in place of a; I
together in the same manner as those of ordinary pipgs-thatis, by inserting the end ot one length a short distance into the end of the other. foldis necessary, the overlapping of the "fold hein g such that the watercannot escape were. Instead ofa-cylindrical pipe, one of a square, triangular, or of other sectional "form may be .made, the shape of the pipe depending upon that of the former upon which the strip of metal is coiled.
One advantage of my improved pipe is that it can expand to a limited extent and accom- I modate itself to the ice which'frequently'forms in waste-water pipes during the .Win ter months. As no soldering'is required, except it be at the extreme ends, where either patches of solder -or rivets may be used, and 'as'acomparatively cheap material maybe employed in the manufactureof the pipes, they-are more economical than those heretofore "used;
I claim as my invention and desire to "secure by Letters Patenti A water-pipe consisting of a strip of metal to this specification in the presence of two sub scribin g witnesses.
