To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jens B. Rear, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Tubing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawing, forming part of this specification, and in which 7 Figure 1 represents a top view of a skclp, as the same is constructed toforui my improved tubing;
Figure 2, a transverse section-of the same;
Figure 3, a longitudinal sectionof said tubing; and
Figure 4, an outside longitudinal view thereof.

My invention consists in a spirally-lapped metal tube, formed with a lock, following the direction of the spiral, by constructing the skelp, of which the tube or tubing is rnade, \rithja tongue and groove, or lookingridge and i'urrow'on reverse sides of its opposite edges, so that on spirally wrapping the skelp around aman drel, its edges not only lap one over the other, but also establish a lock by the fit of the tongues in the grooves of the skelp, after which the tubing may be welded, or the spiral joint closed by soldering, or other-" wise.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents a metal skelp, of any desired length, widtln and thickness, according to the size and strength of the tubing to be made. Said skelp is formed with longitudinal .grooves or furrows, a, and tongues or ridges, I), on reverse sides of its opposite edges. This may be done in one operation, by rolling the heated skelp, and the same'heat subsequently serve to effect the spiral twist of the skelp around a rotating mandrel, in doing which, the edges of the skelp, during such formation of the tubing, are not only made to lap one over the other, but, by the fit of the tongues b' in the grooves a, to establish a lock in direction of the spiral run of the skclp, free from any objectionable protrusion externally or internally, without scarfiug the edges This tongue and groove, or rii'lge and furrow-lock serve to hold the spiral lap of the tubing in place during the after-process of welding, soldering, or sealing the spiral joint, and materially add to the strength of the finished tubing, especially in direction of its length, and, furthermore, contribute to the closeness or tightness of the tubing.

-While itis desirable, for the purposes of strength and smoothness, or regularity of surface insuch tubing, to form the skelp with tongues and grooves of equal size, or thereabouts, on both of its sides-or faces, as represented and described, such construction may be modified by constructing the skelp with simply or mainly a groove or furrow along its one edge, on its one side or face, and a mere or prominent tongue or ridge along its other edge, on its opposite side or face, which construction will also produce a spirally-lapped tube or tubing, of the character specified, that is, with a lock following the direction of the spiral run of the skclp of which said tubing is made.
I f necessary, the tubing may have any desired thickness or increased strength given to it by wrapping, u'efera-bly, in a reverse direction, another skelp outside of or around it, and so on for any number of layers in succession.
. \Vhatis here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-- The improved method, herein described, of making tubes by rolling the skelp with lmigitudinal ridges and furrows, on its alternate edge-faces, and lapping the same in a spiral direction to form a lock, in the manner specified.
