Description

PATENTED FEB. 12, 1907.
R. H. MCDOWELL.
FOUNTAIN BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 27, 1906 INVENTOR TED STATES ATENT FETCH FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
llnplication filed April 27,1906. Serial No. 314,025.
To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it knowri that L-ROBERT H. MCDOWELL, a resident ofSalem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Fountain Brushes; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fountain-brushes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of brush or sponge especially designed for foundry use and provide an improved reservoir for filling the same.
There is great need in foundries of a brush or sponge for supplying water under perfect control of the molder which will enable him to handle the brush or sponge without wetting his hands, as this is a source of great annoyance, resulting in sorc hands, and a further essential is to provide means for supplying the device with water which does not consume the time of the molder.
My improvements fulfil all the above re quirements and consist in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim. p
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is 2. view in vertical section ill Htrating my inipr vemcnts, and Figs. 2 and 3 are-views oi details of construction.
1 represents my improved fountain brush or s 'iongc, and 2 a reservoir to support and fill the same. Thcbrush comprises'a tube 3, having an elastic bulb 4 socurml to one end either b y being sprung into a recess in the tube, as shown in l ig. 1, or clamped to the tube by a nut 5, as shown in Fig. 2, or may be secured in any other approved manner. The discharge end of tube 3 is slightly contracted to receive the brush 6. The brush preferably comprises a number of line hairs, around the mid dlc of which a wire 7 is twisted to hold the brush together, and this wire is inserted in the tube and drawn thercthrough to bend or fold the hairs into the form of a brush, as shown, the inner end of the wire 7 being-secured to a cro sswire 8 at the inner end of tube 3 to hold the brush in the tube. The
brush loosely fits the discharge end of the tube to enable a great or lesser flow of Water or other liquid employed, as the operator may desire, and the wire 7 insures the brush always remaining in operative position. The reservoir 2, which may be of any material, is made with a central neck 9 at its .top, preferably rolled back to form a smooth seat for the bulb 4 to support the brush in the reservoir. An air-vent 10 is provided in the neck portion 9 of the reservoir to admit air freely to the reservoir to permit the bulb to freely draw the Water from the reservoir up into the tube and bulb as the latter expands.
The operation of my improvements is as follows: The reservoir 2 is filled with the liquid to be used, and the bulb 4 is comervoir with the brush end of the tube 3 subnwrgedv in the water. As the bulb expands it will draw the liquid therein to fill the same, the vent 10 in the reservoir permitting the bulb to freely take the water from the reservoir. When the molder desires the brush he grasps the bulb, and as he moves the brush over the mold hc compresses the bulb to eject the quantity of liquid desired, and when through with the brush he inserts it into the reservoir and permits the brush to fill itself ready for the next operation.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is having a filling and discharging bulb at one end, of a reservoir having an opening to receive the brush and support the bulb, said reservoir having a vent to admit air and permit the contents of the reservoir to be drawn into the device by means of the bulb while said bulb is resting onthe reservoir.
, In testimony whereof I have signed this ing' Witnesses.
ROBERT H. MCDOWELL.
