SAMUEL'MACFERRAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA Letters Patent No. 84,366, dated November 24, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN REMOVABLE HEADS FOR BOXES, 8L0.
. The Schedule referred to in these Letters f'atent and 'maln'ng part of the same.
To all whom it may comm Be it known that I, SAMUEL MACFERRAN, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Penn or elliptical paper boxes, wooden, metallic, or other ware,
in their places.
The said lever is pivoted to one end of the encircling strap, and has on its inner side a permanent elliptical eccentric or curved wedge-shaped projection, which is placed inan elongated or elliptical slot in the other end of the strap, so that by turning the lever partly around, andbringing said projection to bear on the outer end of the slot, the inner periphery of the box or other vessel is brought tightagainst a rebate of the removable end, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification- 1 Figure 1 is a topview of apaper box with the improved strap in connection therewith.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 an edge view of a portion of the strap and lever in connection.
Figure 4 is a side view of the same.-
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A represents a paper box.
B is its lid, which has a rebate, a, that fits loosely in the end ofthe box.
O is an encircling metallic strap, which is secured to the outer periphery of the box by means of rivets I),
' each end of the strap being left hes, so as to spring from or be drawn up tight against the box, to confine t e lid B.
This is effected by the lever D, which has oniits inner side a permanent elliptical projection, c, the pivot 11, which connects .the lever with the end of the strap 0, being-nearer the outer end of the projection.
To give the requisite thickness to the end of the strap, so as to properly support the pivot d, I connect the casting E therewith, by means of rivets e e.
On'the' other end of the strap there is a casting, h, similarly connected. This casting has an elliptical or elongated slot, j; in which the eccentric, c, of the lever D, is placed, and by turning the lever partly around, so as to bring the large side of the eccentric to bear on the outer end of the slot f, as seen in figs. Land 2, the strap is drawn tight against the rebate a; and when thelid is to be removed from-the box, the latter is allowed to spring outwards, by turning the lever, so as to bring the eccentric, 0, into the position shown in figs. 3 and 4.
The strap is made of suchlength that the position of the lever, shown in figs. 1 and 2, will give the maximum degree of tightening required. Sometimes it will not be required to turn it so far around. p
I do not confine myself to making the tighteningprojection c of elliptical form, as represented in the drawings, as a permanent or curved wedge, partly around the pivot d,.will answer the purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to seem-e by Letters Patent, isg Thecombination of the lever D, having an elliptical orwedge-shaped projection, c, with one end of the tightening-strap C, and the slotted piece F with the of May, 1868.
