BERTRAM GRAY, OF JOliANNESBURG, TRANSVAAL.
'E'OGGLE AFEM.
Specification 0 Application filed August To all "Ll/750712, 2 6 'IIMILI/ cancer/21' Be it known that I, Bnn'rnan GRAY, a sub- 1 ect 01 His Ma esty the hing of Great Brit- IF I in the certain new toggle arms ain, residing at Johannesburg, vaal Colony, have invented a and useful improvement in To which the following is a specie-c This invention relates to which, while being applicable to a variety of l purposes, are designed more use in rook-breakers or that swinging aw is oscillated to parlicularl crating upon the knuckle er a role, the ex tremiiies or which bear against 1 frame and the oscillating aw, re
1 jaw by means of a reciproca. pitman opi In such machines it is found .11 *cessary, owing to the rapid wear of the jaws, to frequently replace the toggle-arms by lo ger ones, for l which shorter ones must again be substi-l tuted when new aws are htted, and this, bo-
sides involving the provision of a number oi costly spare parts, is, especially in the case cl large machines, a la pying much time.
he purpose of the present invention is to provide a strong and rigid toggle-arm ol' variable length which enables the required adjustments to be made without displacing it and without jacking over the pitman and swinging jaw in the manner which has been necessary heretofore.
According to this invention and in one form of same the toggle-arm is composed oi two permanent end pieces, betwecn\\'..i-h is bcrious operation occuor are inserted one or more comparatively li ht and ortable cachin ieces. A screw h J o having right and left hand turea end, respectively, or the eruuvalent such. a screw engages with the end pieces and permlts them to be seiarated tor the removal oi a packing-piece or to be tightened upon lute same. Packing-pieces of various widths are provided for altering the length oi the arm, as desired.
Two embodiments oi the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in 1 which Figure 1 is a quasi-perspective view of one i or a vpe in which a 1 is a plan of the modified Patented Feb. 5, 1907.
{ iel'erring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 are the two permanei'it end pieces, having the usual rounded bcaring-surl'aces 2. They are connectez'l hr a screw 3, having a central portion or head 1, which may be used in conjunction with a lie s" anner, or other suitable means to rotate the screw. The screw 3 has oppositelv-ihreaded ends litting into suitable nuts or screwed portions in the end pieces 1, which ma,- be bcssed, as shown at 5, around the SUL'OW to stir-er then the parts at those points. 1 Two piuiking-pieces (3 in this case are employed. The; are formed so that they do ot drop out when the end pieces are sufliczentl. separated to permit the former to be i wiiiulrawn. The comprise a rectangular under portion 9, having shoulders 7 and a tape-Jed portion above these shoulders. The opposed faces of the two permanent pieces 1 l are corresponrlingl shaped, and the prooriions are preferably such that when the 1 parts arescparated just sullicicntly' for the packing-piece to be lifted out the shoulder 7 j is unab e to pass the restricted lower portion of i rturc, whereby such packing-piece i is n rmall x supported by the end pieces. It i will be apparent that the packing-pieces may be constructed in other forms which will give the desired ell'ect, and they may be fitted with handles to facilitate their removal. As shown, the; are of sucl length that a space is left between them at their ends to enable the tool employed to reach the nut 4.
in the modification illustrated in Figs. 3
and 4, the majority." 01 the parts being the same are indicated by the same letters of reference. The main variation from the togglearm previousl described is that a single 1 packingiece is used, as shown at 12 in Fig. i l, which may be hollowed out, as shown at 11, to receive and permit 01 the rotation of the screw 3 ad nut +1. Such piece 12 further i has its tapered part and rectangular part 0})- positel arranged to that in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein it must be removed from the bottom of the toggle-arm. The holes 14 in this form may be used for th reception of a suitable single bent handle. in utilizing either oi the forms of togglearms, supp sn'ig that wear of the crusheri jaws necessitates the use of a longer arm, the screw 3 is turned so as to separate the end pieces 1. T118 swinging jaw of the crusher is thereby forced over, but without the laborious jacking heretofore required, and, moreover, the arm needs no extraneous ICC IIO
support, as formerly. The packing pieces or piece is or are now taken out and replaced by one of greater or lesser width, and after screw 1 ing up the arm is again ready for use, being thus lengthened or shortened as desired and with equal facility.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A toggle-arm ccniprising end pieces, a screw engaging said end pieces and a packi 1ng-p1ece between said end pieces, adapted l to be supported by the end pieces when the latter are separated sufficiently to permit of the withdrawal of said packing piece or pieces in the op pcsite direction. I 2. A toggle-arm comprising end pieces iiiering threads engaging said end pieces, a tapered packing-piece between said end pieces, and shoulders to said packing-uiece, said end pieces having recesses corscrew having d responding to such shoulders and tapered fac es corresponding to the tapered faces of the packing-pieces.
3. A toggle-arm comprising end pieces a screw having right and left handed threads engaging said end pieces, a packing-piece having tapered faces, and a rectangular portion, and shoulders to said packing-pieces, said end pieces having recesses corresponding to such shoulders, tapered faces corresponding to the tapered faces of the packing-piece and straight faces corresponding to the straight face of the packing-pieces.
In testilncng' whereof I have hereunto set 1113' hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
