My invention has for its object to furnish an improved bedstead, which shall be so constructcd and arran'ged that the bedstead may be compactly, quickly, and conveniently folded for storage and transportation, and in such a manner that the frame of the bedstead may be protected, by the slat-fi'ames that form the bed-bottom, from injury while stored or while being transported; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.

'A are the posts of the bedstead,'to which the end rails B and the end boards or racks are permanently attached.

The posts A are made in two parts, the plane of division passing through the said posts, just aboYe the upper edges of the end rails B and the side rails O, as shown in fig. 3.

The upper parts of the post-s A are hinged to the lower parts of said posts, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, in such a way that they may be folded down out- Ward, so as to lie along and be parallel with the lower parts of said posts, as shown in fig. 1.

When the upper parts of the posts A are raised into a Vertical position, they are secured in place by hooks a', as shown in fig. 3, or by -bolts or other suitable device.

The side rails O of the bedstead are 'made in two parts, the adjacent ends of which parts are hinged to each other, and the outer ends of which' parts are hinged to theV posts A, so that the said parts may fold together inward, and lie along the end rails B, as shown in fig. 2.

D are the cross-slats upon which the bed rests, and

to which are attached the longitudinal slats or bars E. The ends of the cross-slats D rest upon shoulders or loops, c', attachedto the inner sides of the side bars O, as shown in figs. 2 and 4,. v

The ends of one or more of the cross-slats, D are provided with hook-plates d', the hooks of which hook into the loops c', attached to the side bars O, as hereinbefore described. p

The longitudinal bars or slats E are made in two parts, the inner ends of which parts meet, orlnearly meet, at the centre of the bedstead.

The outer ends of the part-s of the bars E are connected to the end rails B by the elbow-straps F, one

arm of said straps being attached to the ends of the said bars E, and their other ends being hinged or pivoted to the end rails B.

The parts of the bar E are jointed, as shown in figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, at such a distance from their outer ends that when the bedstead is folded together the slat-racks may be'folded down upon the onter sides of the end parts of the bedstead-ti'z'ime, as shown in figs. 1 and 2,

so as to protect the said frame fromaccidental injury when folded.

G are hooks, one end of which'is pivoted to the bars-E, near the free ends of the parts of said bars,

and which are so formed that when the bedstead is extended they may hook into the free ends of the other I parts of said bars, as shown in figs. 3 and 4, and so that when the bedstead is folded together, they may pass beneaththe said folded bedstead, and in that position hook into the said free ends of the other parts of said bars, as shown in fig. 1.

The hooks co' may be so arranged' that vwhen thebedstead is folded together they may secure its various parts to each other, forming a compact package or bundle. 4

I claim as new, and desire to secure by ;letters Patent- An improved folding bedstead, formed by the combination of the hinged posts A, hinged side bars O, cross-slats 1),v jointed longitudinal bars or slats E, hinged or pivoted elbow-straps F, and hooks G, with each other, said parts being constructcd and arran'ged substantially as herein shown and describe'd, and for the purpose set forth.
