Description

111ml gittata ,s clem WILLIAM THOMPSON, OIF DUBLIN, IRELAND.-
Letters Patent No. 84,319, lated November 24, 1868; patented in Eng/m1, November l1, 1867.
CAR-WINDOW vENTrLAToR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'muy con-cern Be it known that l, WILLIAM Tnonesox, of No. 85 Lower Gardiner street, in the city vof Dublin, and of Clare Hall, in the county of Dublin, Ireland, have invented an Improved Omnibus Dust-Blind and Ventilator, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 4and to the tigures and letters marked thereon; that is to say-.
My invention 'consists in'an improved construction of blind or ventilator for windows, doors, and other parts of omnibnses and street-cars, which blind or ventilator is so ananged that, while it adniits of the free passage of the air, itveifec-tually prevents the entrance of dustinto thcvehicle. For this purpose, a number of trough-shaped tubes, of glass, metal, or other material', are tixed side by side, cit-her vertically, dia-gonally, or horizontally, in the framing of the blind, small interstices being made to intervene between each two of the tubes. Behind this row of trough-shaped tubes is a second row, so arranged that'cach tube is opposite to or covers one of the interstices in the tirst row, other hiterstices being made to intervene both between the two rows and between the tubes in the second row. If requisite, one or more other rows may be placed behind the second one, each successive row being arranged so as to cover the interstices of the preceding one.
All the.. tubes being placed so that the open sides thereof are turned toward the outside of the vehicle, it will be seen that, while the air is free to pass through, the dust that is not caught up bythe tirst row of troughs will be caught, either entirely by the second, or, if not, then by the third, and so on.
Insonle cases, a sheet of glass or other suitable material may be placed either in iront of or behind the tubes, spaces heilig, however, lcft for the passage of air. Also, the tubes may be arranged so as to be movable if required.
To enable others skilled inthe artto ina-ke and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction a-nd operation, with reference to'the accompanying th'awings, making a part hereof, in which- Figure l shows side eleva-tion of my improved dust-blind or ventilator.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan, and
Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same.
M M are my before-described improved dust-blinds or ventilators.
These consist of a flaming, Im., in which are arranged two, three, or more rows of trough-shaped tubes, -m fm', in such a manner that the open sides of the tubes are all turned toward the outside of the omnibus, the second row of tubes being arranged so as to cover the small intersticcs between the troughs ofthe rst row, and the third row being made to cover the interstices in the second row, as clearly indicated in lig. 2.
Small spaces being also made to intervene between each row of tubes, it will be evident that the air .Will readily pass through the blind or ventilator, while the dust will be effectually intercepted by the troughs in the several rows.
In order to clean the troughs, 'om time to time,
they are made to pass through the top ofthe frame m,
as shown at the section, tig. 3, so as to be capable of being drawn out, and they are secured in their places by a hinged cover, a, closing over the top ofthe frame, and secured by a button or catch.
The troughs m' may either be lmade of a rounded transverse-sectional form, as shown, or they may be of any other convenient form. Y
I apply the invention thus described not only to omnibuses, but ,also to street and railroad-cars, and other structures, where both ventilation and a protection against dust are at thev same time desired, and all such applications I include in my invention; nor do lI limit myself to any particular size or material for the troughs or trough-shaped tubes m', nor to any particular radius of concavity; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A dust-blind and ventilator, consisting of tWo or more rows of troughs or trough-'shaped tubes, m', set in a suitable traine-work, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof, I, the said WILLIAM THOMP- SON, have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 28th day of February, 1868.
WILLIAM THOMPSON. Witnesses:
PATRICK DARCY, ROBERT LEES.
