' APPLIOATIOI FILED AUG. 15. 1908.
ROBERT Hermann, .or cass-EL, ennivmiar.-
CIGARETTE-Penman..
N. 842,886. specification of Letters Patent.
To all'wltom t may concern; l
Be it known that I, Ronnr HoFFMAnn, a subject of the Emeror of Germany, reslding at Cassel, in the mpire of Germany, have 'invented certain new and useful Improve-l ments in,Cigarette-For1ners, of which the following 1s a speciiicatlon.- 1
My invention .relates to lmproveinents 1n cigarette-formels, in which threerollers with an endless band are arranged for rolling the.
' tobacco and for placing the wrapper around thejrolled tobacco; and the 'objects of my iinprovement are, iirs't, to provide means for varying at will the distance between the lower roller and the two upperrollers in. accordance with the desired diameter of the oigarettesto be formed; second, to provide means for securing the adjusted lowenroller` from shifting;l gthird, to provide. means for shifting the one upper roller with regard to the other upper roller, which serves as a driving-roller; fourth, to provide the drivingrollerwith a rough surface, and, fifth, to provide awrapper-wetting device above the two" upper rollers. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, ,in which- ,l Figurel [is a vertical longitudinal section through 'a cigarette-former on the line C D in Fig, .2, the cover being turned upward. Fig. 2 is ,a vertical cross-section through the,
same on the line A B in Fig. l and Fig. 3 is a -side view of the same, thev cover being turned downward.,
.Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views. The
casing e is` made from any suit'able material "and is preferably made rectangular in'l horizontal section. .The one upper roller b is mounted to turn with its pins 1n this casing ey and is provided with a suitable crank p, means of 'which'it can be turned. The two end -sides of the casing e are each rovided with a horizontal slot and. refera )l three vertical recessesf, in w lich t 1e r ins h' 1. 'of the upper roller c engage. .l 'It wil be seen that' the roller c can be shifted and be brought intoeither of three positions (I, Il, and Ill, see
Fig. 3) atdiil-'erentdistances from the roller b. The end sides of the casing e are further each provided with a vertical slot r andpreferably six alternating. horizontal recesses g,. in which-the pins t i of the lower roller d en# gage. Thus the latter can be equally shifted and be brought into either'of the six positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; (Shown at Fig. 3.) In' Application and August 15,' i906. serial no. 4330.619.i
exam le, the'li e.
Patented Feb. 5,1907.
either of .these positions the roller d can be secured from shifting bymeans of two slides 7c, 'each' of which is rovided with two vertical slots s s. The sli( es c are vertically guided 6o on. the casing e in any known manner, and it v will.. be` seen that the pins. 1, 'i of the lower roller. d canv engage in either slot s of each shde 7c'. By lifting the two slides 7c the pins t i ofthe roller d`w1ll be released, so that they 65 `can be shifted. An endless band a of any suitable material lis placed around the three rollers c, 'and d'. The casing e is rovided with a cover l, which can be turne upward and is in any known manner arranged to sup- 7 o por t itself in its open position. (Shown at Fig. 2.) The cover l is preferably provided with a wetting-pad m. The driving-roller b is prefera'bly provided with a' rough surface-for covering it with emery-paper or 75 hereby a greater friction can be produced between the roller b'and the endless bande, so that the llatter can be taken along by the former with a greater certainty.
The cigarette-former is operated as fol- 8 lows: For a certain diameter of the cigarettes to be for-med the lower roller d is adjusted, according, to experience, by-placing ltspins te 1n the res ective vrecesses g-say in the position 5 in Fig. 3-and by securing 85 them by means of the slides k. vThen the pins' h h. of the upper roller care inserted in the respective vertical 'recessesf-say in the position II-so that the two rollers b and c lare apart from each other.
The cover l is 9o turned upward and tobacco is placed on the horizontal part of the endless band a. be`
tween the two rollers b and c and is pushed `downward or packed, so as to tighten. the
band a,.
Next the roller'c is shifted and is 95 brought into the position III, nearest the driving-'roller11,A` so that the tobacco filling up the lspace 4or pocket between the band c and the two rollers b and c willbe compressed; Thereu on the crank is so turned as .to loc nieve t e endless ban 1a, whereby the to-Y bacco will be rolled. Then-the lower edge A of aA wrapper lnl is inserted in the slit between the two rollers b and c and' its upperedge is pressed against the wetting-pad m for wet-105 .ting its gum o rother adhesive substance.
By turning the crank the wrapperv lnl will be taken along by thel and a and it will be wrapped around the rolled tobacco, so'that a cigarette is now formed. At last the uplper 1 lo roller c is shifted into its initial position to release the cigarette, which can be taken' out of the casing e. Any tobacco getting between the two rollers-b andge andthe walls` of the casing e is allowed to escape through an aperture o provided in the bottom.
It will be seen that by placingthe lower roller d higher upwardsay in the osition 1 in Fig. 3-a larger s ace or poc et-can lbe formed between thei and a and the twoer rollers b and ein their positions shown V,have a larger` diameter. Of course the upper rollervc may in this .case be shifted into. the positionl in Fig. 3. for; the introduction of l l.the tobacco. By adjusting thelower roller.,
d in either of the six positions 1,2, 3, 4, 5, and
' 6 the diameter of .the cigarettes can be regulated, lit being. a maximum for the position. l and amininiunnfor the position 6 ofthe iroller d.
. The wetting device renders it' unneces- A sary to wet the wrappers Withones tongue,.
which is objectionable for wellfknown hy-. giemc reasons.
HThe construction ofthe cigarette-former ,maybe lvaried in many respects Without de- The i hearings therein near the upper parts of the same and bearings near the bottoms thereof l.and a cover, a pair of rolls journaled in lthe upper bearings', a single roll journaled in the lower-` bearing an endless belt guided over f, the rolls, means for rotating one of the upper i described.
rolls for feeding' the belt` and apaper-inois- .tener-carried by the cover, substantially as '2.2 In a cigaretterformer, the combination with a casing, two op osite sides of -which are each rovided in t Le lower part with a verticals ot1andl a plurality. of adjoining 4horizontal recesses and in theu'pper-.part
